The Johor Bahru–Singapore Rapid Transit System or Singapore-Johor Bahru Rapid Transit System (RTS Link) is a underway cross-border rapid transit system that would connect Woodlands, Singapore and Johor Bahru, Malaysia, crossing the Straits of Johor.
If built, it would be the second rail link between the two countries, after KTM Intercity's Tebrau Shuttle, and the first designed for high-volume cross-border metro system ever build.
The first part of a preliminary engineering study was completed in March 2014, with the initial completion year targeted for 2019. However, according to Datuk Ismail Ibrahim, CEO of the Iskandar Regional Development Authority, completion date is targeted for 2022.
Currently envisioned as a new two-station line to cater high volume commuter, the Singapore end would be located near Republic Polytechnic and Woodlands North MRT Station on the upcoming Thomson-East Coast MRT Line, and the Malaysian end would be at Southern Integrated Gateway which is located at Bukit Chagar, within walking distance to Keretapi Tanah Melayu Intercity services at JB Sentral and the planned Iskandar Malaysia BRT. Both new stations are planned to have co-located Singaporean and Malaysian customs, immigration and quarantine facilities. Bridge and tunnel options were considered for the link across the Johor Straits.
A 25m high bridge near the Johor–Singapore Causeway was decided upon during the leaders' retreat held between the prime ministers, Lee Hsien Loong of Singapore and Najib Razak of Malaysia, in December 2016. The announcement was made on 13 December in a joint news conference after the signing of a bilateral agreement on the Kuala Lumpur–Singapore High Speed Rail project. They agreed that the RTS Link will connect the Thomson-East Coast MRT Line (TEL) from Woodlands North MRT Station to Johor Baru via the high bridge and the link will utilise the same four core systems (trains, signalling system, communications system, and Integrated Supervisory Control System) as upcoming Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL). The bilateral agreement for the RTS Link was signed on 16 January 2018.
