He is an important figure in Islam as he was a member of the Bayṫ (Arabic: بَـيـت‎‎, Household) of Muhammad, and Ahl al-Kisā’ (Arabic: أَهـل الـكِـسَـاء‎‎, People of the Cloak), as well as being the third Shi'ite Imam.
