Gaia Charter

The Gaia Foundation is a loosely-knit network of organisations that promote ecologically sustainable development. Members of the network regard themselves to be part of the Gaia Movement, a term coined by environmentalist James Lovelock in the late 1960s for proponents of his Gaia hypothesis, which posits that the earth is a superorganism.

Associated organisations are involved in a variety of research, educational, political and community activities, which address concerns such as reducing carbon footprints, sustainable use of natural resources, social and economic issues affecting the environment, and environmental impacts of human waste. For example, in the Galga Valley region of Hungary, the Ariadne Gaia Foundation trains farmers in organic and sustainable agricultural methods. Klub Gaja of Poland has worked to limit industrial development of the Vistula River. In Australia, Gaia Foundation projects have included rural resettlement and deep ecology training.

Several other countries host related organisations named "Gaia Foundation", including Malta,United Kingdom and United States. Also, a number of related organisations have similar names. In Brazil, Fundação Gaia has operated its Rincão Gaia agricultural facility since 2005. Charitable organisations include Denmark's Gaia Trust, Turkey's Gaya NPO, Canada's Gaia Foundation for Earth Education, and the Gaia Institute and GAIA in the United States.
