Füzuli (also known as Fizuli, Karjagino, Karyagino, or Sardar) is a city and the capital of the western Hadrut Region of Nagorno Karabakh Republic. Due to the ongoing war, it is currently an uninhabited ghost town.
Once known as Qarabulaq, the village was renamed Karyagino in 1827 to honour , a Russian military hero of the Russo-Persian War. It was renamed in 1959, in honour of the 16th-century poet Fuzûlî. During the 1993 Summer Offensives of the Nagorno-Karabakh War, Fizuli was captured by Armenian forces and - though parts of the surrounding region were later retaken - the city itself remains in occupied territory, essentially a ghost town.
