In July 2016, Consolidated Communications completed a merger with Champaign Telephone Company and its sister company, Big Broadband Services, a private business communications provider in the Champaign–Urbana metropolitan area.

In December 2016, Consolidated Communications announced that it would purchase FairPoint Communications for $1.5 billion including assumption of debt.
