Clay City was originally called Markland, and under the latter name was platted in 1873 when the railroad was extended to that point.
It was originally called "Markland," but that name could not be used because another post office in Indiana used that name. The name "Huntersville" was adopted in honor of U.S. Congressman Morton C. Clay City is named for Kentucky statesman Henry Clay.
