Boomerang (also known as Boomerang Africa or Boomerang MENA when referring to the individual feeds) is a television channel which airs children's cartoons. This is a version of the Boomerang channel that is offered in the Arab world, Africa, Greece and Cyprus. Most Boomerang programmes which feature spoken dialogue are available in English, Arabic and Greek. The Greek audio track for Boomerang was launched in October 2011 for most programmes with spoken dialogue.
On 1 July 2016, a separate feed known as Boomerang MENA was launched for the Arab world, airing with an Arabic audio track on beIN. Boomerang MENA is also the version used in Greece and Cyprus. It has a separate schedule from Boomerang Africa, and features differing censorship rules as well.
The channel was launched on 5 June 2005 as a channel for the Middle East, Africa, as well as many other territories in Europe, with some shows dubbed into Greek for Greece and Cyprus, as well as Polish and Hungarian for Poland and Hungary, respectively.
The African website is BoomerangTVAfrica.com, which was launched in 2010.
In October 2010, the channel also started to broadcast certain shows in Romanian.
On 12 October 2011, the Central and Eastern Europe feed (Poland, Hungary, Romania and Russia) was separated from the pan-European feed with its own schedule (see Boomerang (CEE)). From that point onwards, a preschool block called Cartoonito was added to both feeds; the block was later removed from the feeds.
However, the Netherlands (and the Flanders region in Belgium), Portugal, Arab world, Africa, Greece and Cyprus (including some operators in the Czech Republic) continued to carry the pan-European version of the channel.
The channel was available in Portugal until 31 December 2013, when it was removed due to the launch of the Portuguese feed of Cartoon Network.
On 1 November 2014, all TV operators in the Netherlands, the Flanders region in Belgium, and the Czech Republic began airing the CEE version of the channel instead, leaving Greece and Cyprus as the only European countries where the channel is broadcast; from that day onward, Boomerang in the Netherlands and Belgium has been broadcasting in Dutch. In the Netherlands (and the Flanders region in Belgium), however, this was only a temporary measure, since a fully localized version of the channel would be launched soon.
