Area code 707

Area code 707 is a California telephone area code that was split from area code 415 on March 1, 1959. It covers the northwestern portion of the state of California. It serves the far northern fringe of the San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the North Coast and the northwestern portion of the state. Major cities in the area code include Napa, Sebastopol, Vallejo, Benicia, Fairfield, Santa Rosa, Windsor, Healdsburg, Rohnert Park, Petaluma, Fort Bragg, Crescent City, Eureka, Clearlake, Vacaville, Ukiah, and northwestern California.

When 707 came online, it was the last new area code in California until 619 in 1982, and completed California's stable eight (along with 213, 415, 916, 714, 408, 805, and 209). Furthermore, it is the only one of those eight area codes that has not been further split. This is despite explosive growth in the area, particularly its southern portion, as well as the proliferation of cell phones and pagers. However, when area code 916 split into area code 530 on November 1, 1997, the Dixon area moved from area code 916 to 707 and also from the Sacramento LATA into the San Francisco LATA.
