Rafael Nadal was the defending champion, but lost to Novak Djokovic in the final and ended his 20-match Wimbledon winning streak dating back to 2008 (he missed the 2009 event due to an injury).
Djokovic won his first Wimbledon title and it was his third Grand Slam title.
Both Nadal and Djokovic were in contention for the World No. 1 ranking at the start of the tournament for the second time. Upon reaching the final, Djokovic gained the World No. 1 ranking for the first time after beating Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the semifinals. This marked the first time that neither Roger Federer nor Nadal was ranked No. 1 since 2 February 2004, as well as the first time since 2002 that neither Federer nor Nadal was the Wimbledon singles champion.
