Svetlana Kuznetsova was the defending champion, but lost in the third round to Maria Kirilenko.

Francesca Schiavone claimed her first and only Grand Slam tournament title in her maiden Grand Slam singles final, defeating Samantha Stosur (who was also playing in her first Major singles final), 6–4, 7–6(7–2). Schiavone thus became the first Italian woman to win a Grand Slam tournament. This final was the first since the 2004 tournament that both finalists were appearing in their maiden Grand Slam singles final.

This tournament is notable for the final appearance of former world No. 1 Justine Henin in the main draw following her comeback. Prior to her defeat to Stosur in the fourth round, Henin had a streak of 24 match wins in the tournament.

Future world No. 1 Simona Halep made her first main draw appearance in a Grand Slam where she lost to Stosur in the opening round.
