Kim Clijsters was the defending champion, but chose not to participate that year due to injury.
Maria Sharapova won her second Grand Slam title, defeating Justine Henin-Hardenne in the final.
By reaching the final, Henin-Hardenne became the eighth woman, after Maureen Connolly, Margaret Court, Chris Evert, Martina Navratilova, Steffi Graf, Monica Seles and Martina Hingis, to reach all four Grand Slam finals in a calendar year. By losing the final, Henin-Hardenne missed an opportunity to return to World No.1 in the rankings, following Amélie Mauresmo's semi-final loss.
