Runner-up | Martina Navratilova |
Final score | 6–4, 3–6, 6–3 |
Steffi Graf was the defending champion, but she lost in the first round to Lori McNeil ending her streak of thirty-one consecutive quarterfinal appearances dated back in 1985 Wimbledon (not counting the 1985 Australian Open, 1986 Wimbledon, 1987 Australian Open and 1992 Australian Open). This also would be significant as it was her only loss at Wimbledon between 1991 and 1997, and the first time that a Grand Slam defending champion lost in the first round. Apart from this match, Graf reached the quarterfinals of every major she entered from 1985 to 1997.
Conchita Martínez ended up winning the championship, defeating Martina Navratilova in the final, 6–4, 3–6, 6–3. It was Martínez's first and only Grand Slam title, and Navratilova's last appearance in a Grand Slam final.
