Enabavi


Enabavi is a small village, 10 km away from Jangaon in Warangal District of India, with around 45 houses.

The village is noted for turning out to be Andhra Pradesh's first organic village since 2006 in terms of agriculture and farming. The initiative was spearheaded by one of the elderly, Mr. Ponnam Mallaiah and supported by quite a few organizations like the "Centre for Sustainable Agriculture" in association with the "Centre for Rural Operations and Programmes Society" (CROPS). Paddy, vegetables, maize, corn, chillies, etc., are grown in this space.

According to a CROPS volunteer who works from Jangaon, approx. 70,000 to 80,000 people have visited this village in the past few years including a team from Satyamev Jayate (TV series).

Mr. Ponnam Mallaiah received two awards for leading the activity and making it successful. One from Ramdev Baba's Foundation and the other from the National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development

Erewhon Organic Cereal (pronounced AIR-wahn) is a food brand specializing in pure ingredients and simply processed, organic whole foods that support digestive health. It was one of the first companies to introduce and market macrobiotic, organic whole foods in the United States. Its name is derived from the 1872 novel of the same name by Samuel Butler. In the satirical novel, Erewhon (an anagram of “nowhere”) is a utopia in which individuals are responsible for their own health.

Since the early 1950s, Aveline Kushi and Michio Kushi had been introducing modern macrobiotics into the United States from Japan. They were both students of George Ohsawa, the founder of the modern macrobiotic movement, since after World War II. In the late 1960s, the Kushis began forming study groups in New York and later in Massachusetts in which they lectured on wide-ranging topics from philosophy and spiritualism, to healthy diet and disease prevention. Their following began to increase, and as word spread, they decided to open a store to meet the ever-growing demand for macrobiotic and whole foods products. On 9 April 1966, the Kushis founded Erewhon Natural Foods as a small macrobiotic and natural foods retail store at 303-B Newbury Street in Boston. Aveline Kushi being the sole owner. Erewhon's first product line consisted of processed soy products, including miso and shoyu purchased from Howard Rower's Infinity Foods and Japan Foods Corp., both in New York. The Kushis soon realized that the quality of food needed was not available in the United States. When Michio Kushi discussed his difficulties with an old university friend, his friend remembered a former schoolmate who was now in the import and export business. He thought his business friend in Tokyo, Japan, might be able to help - Akiyoshi Kazama, the founder of Mitoku. In Japan, like other industrialized countries, many producers turned away from their traditional dietary roots in favor of mass-produced, highly processed foods with little of the integrity, flavor, or health promoting qualities of the original product. For example, just about all of Japan's important fermented foods, such as shoyu, tamari, miso, rice vinegar and mirin were being made by hurried, high temperature aging and contained highly processed ingredients. But Akiyoshi Kazama knew could find producers willing to meet Kushi's macrobiotic standards and was inspired by the idea of introducing Americans to the ancient culinary treasures of Japan. So Erewhon began importing food from Japan, as well as developing American organic farming. In August 1967, environmentalist and entrepreneur Paul Hawken took over the management of Erewhon, changed the name to Erewhon Trading Co., and began to expand the business. By the early 1970s, Erewhon began contracting with farmers to produce organically grown crops, by 1973 it had established and contracted with 57 farms in 35 states. It also became one of the first companies to establish a “Charter of Quality Standards for Natural Products” for their product line.

Farm Boy


Farm Boy is an Ottawa-based Eastern Ontario regional supermarket chain that sells primarily fresh produce, baked goods, organic foods, dairy, deli, meat, fish and some prepared products (usually with no additives or preservatives) including a private label line. The company started in December 1981, with its first store in Cornwall, Ontario.

Its primary jingle is It's a farm boy day, so shop the farm boy way. Its current slogan can be found under the Farm Boy sign on its stores, "It's All About The Food."

In December 1981, Collette and Jean-Louis Bellemare opened the first Farm Boy on Cumberland Street in Cornwall, Ontario. At that time, the modest 300 sq. ft. store sold only produce. The second Farm Boy was opened in February 1983 by brother Normand Bellemare in Cornwall.

By October of the next year, the Bellemare brothers joined together to open a Farm Boy on Sydney Street. This 5,000 sq ft (460 m2) store allowed them to expand their products beyond produce with dairy, deli, cheese and meat product lines. An in-store bakery and bulk food were also added.

By 1992, the success of Farm Boy in Cornwall allowed the family to expand their business into other regions; Orleans on Centrum Boulevard in 1992, Nepean in February 1996, Montreal Road in the Hillside Plaza in May 1997, Kanata on Hazeldean Road in November 1997, Blossom Park area in July 2003 and again in Orleans in December 2004. New stores were opened in 2006 at the Blue Heron Mall, on Bank Street, Barrhaven on Woodroffe Avenue, a store on Terry Fox Drive in the Kanata Signature centre in 2007 and Britannia off Richmond Road in 2011. In 2012 they opened a location at Place d'Orleans mall and it was the first store to offer an in store eating area. In 2012 Farm Boy also expanded to Kingston, their first store outside of the Ottawa area.

In the fall of 2003, the Bellemares created a Board of Directors to oversee the overall direction of the company and appointed Jeff York as the new President of Farm Boy in 2009. In 2012 two of the 3 Bellemare brothers stepped down as an investment group out of Boston invested in the company to help them grow.

In the summer of 2014, Farm Boy expanded to London, Ontario. Citing success in its first London location at Wellington Road just north of Bradley Ave, the company announced two more locations would open in the spring of 2015. The first located near Masonville Place in the city's north end, and the region's largest store located at Wonderland and Beaverbrook, just west of Western University. The Wonderland and Beaverbrook location is also home to the company's regional offices.

The George Street Co-op is a food cooperative located in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The George Street Co-op runs a retail store at 89 Morris Street, selling foods and select hygiene and household products to the general public and to its membership. The Co-op, as it is known to its members, maintains a focus on offering vegetarian,organic, local food, naturally grown and fair trade products.

The George Street Co-op was formed in 1973 when ten people from the Rutgers Vegetarian Club started a buying club out of a garage near George Street in New Brunswick. A year later, the Co-op moved to a new building on George Street and opened a small retail store.

In May 1988 the George Street Co-op purchased and moved into a new building at 89 Morris Street. At this time, Co-op members debated renaming the organization, but after much consideration it was decided to keep the historic name.

The George Street Co-op is wholly owned by its membership. Twice per year, a Membership Meeting is convened, with the Co-op's Board of Directors and all interested members present, to discuss overall policies and directions. With the Board as its proxy, the membership steers all George Street Co-op policy.

All George Street Co-op members receive a discount on retail items purchased in the Co-op store. In addition, members may choose to do labor in the store, in return for which they receive additional discounts. A member who works 2 hours per month receives an 8% discount, a member who works 8 hours per month receives a 15% discount, and a member who works 24 scheduled in-store hours per month receives a 25% discount. A non-working member receives a 2% discount.

The Board of Directors consists of up to 12 members, elected to three-year terms by vote of the Co-op membership. The Board makes policy and strategy decisions, selects store management, and (subject to approval by membership vote) makes amendments to the Co-op bylaws. The Board meets on the second Monday of each month.

The Board runs a number of standing committees, dedicated to various priorities such as Finance, Membership, Orientation, Outreach, and Products.

The Fresh Market was founded by Ray and Beverly Berry on March 8, 1982 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Berrys' idea was to develop a better grocery store that brought back the feeling of open European-style markets. The company operates 178 stores in 27 states, located in the Southeast, Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, with plans for continued expansion throughout the country. Their first store in the West opened in October 2012 in Roseville, California. However, in March 2014, the company announced that it was closing all three of its Sacramento area stores including its Roseville store.

In 2012, longtime family-owned Houston grocer Rice Epicurean Markets closed all but one of its 5 stores to make way for The Fresh Market, the Greensboro, N.C.-based specialty food chain announced (November 14, 2012). Fresh Market will remodel each location and plans to open the four stores in the latter half of next year.

After increasing the price of its initial public offering from $18–20 to $22, Fresh Market raised $290 million, and on November 5, 2010, began trading on Nasdaq using the symbol TFM.

Apollo Global Management, LLC (APO), a leading global alternative investment manager, acquired the stock of The Fresh Market, Inc. (TFM) ("The Fresh Market") as of April 27, 2016. As a result, The Fresh Market became a privately-held company and The Fresh Market's common stock ceased trading on the NASDAQ.

In addition to organic milk, The Fresh Market sells grass-fed milk that is homogenized and is pasteurized to kill harmful bacteria while preserving vitamins and helpful enzymes. Meat and dairy products from grass-fed animals can produce 300-500% more conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) than those of cattle fed the usual diet of 50% hay and silage, and 50% grain.

A health food store is a type of grocery store that primarily sells health foods, organic foods, local produce, and often nutritional supplements. Health food stores typically offer a wider or more specialized selection of foods than conventional grocery stores for their customers, for example athletes and bodybuilders, people with special dietary needs, such as people who are allergic to the gluten in wheat or some other substance, or have diabetes mellitus, and for people who observe vegetarian, vegan, raw food, organic, or other alternative diets.

The term health food has been used since the 1920s to refer to specific foods claimed to be especially beneficial to health, although the term has no official definition. Some terms that are associated with health food are macrobiotics, natural foods, organic foods and whole foods. Macrobiotics is a diet focusing primarily on whole cereals. Whole cereals, along with other whole foods, are foods that are minimally processed. Whole cereals have their fiber, germ and hull intact and are considered more nutritious. Natural foods are simply foods that contain no artificial ingredients. Organic foods are foods that are grown without the use of conventional and artificial pesticides and must meet certain organic standards.
