Organic food


Organic food is food produced by methods that comply with the standards of organic farming. Standards vary worldwide, but organic farming in general features practices that strive to cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Organizations regulating organic products may restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming. In general, organic foods are also usually not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetic food additives.

Currently, the European Union, the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, and many other countries require producers to obtain special certification in order to market food as organic within their borders. In the context of these regulations, organic food is produced in a way that complies with organic standards set by regional organizations, national governments and international organizations. Although the produce of kitchen gardens may be organic, selling food with an organic label is regulated by governmental food safety authorities, such as the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) or European Commission (EC).

There is not sufficient evidence in medical literature to support claims that organic food is safer or healthier than conventionally grown food. While there may be some differences in the nutrient and antinutrient contents of organically- and conventionally-produced food, the variable nature of food production and handling makes it difficult to generalize results. Claims that organic food tastes better are generally not supported by evidence.

For the vast majority of its history, agriculture can be described as having been organic; only during the 20th century was a large supply of new products, generally deemed not organic, introduced into food production. The organic farming movement arose in the 1940s in response to the industrialization of agriculture.

4th Street Food Co-op

The 4th Street Food Co-op is a food cooperative located in New York City. The 4th Street Food Co-op runs a retail store at 58 East 4th Street, selling natural foods and household products. The co-op is member-owned and -operated, but open to the public, and focuses on offering locally grown organic, and ethically produced products.

The 4th Street Food Co-op is in the space formerly occupied by the Good Food Co-op that started in 1973 as a buying club and later opened a store front, going out of business in 1992.

In 1995 the Good Food Co-op was replaced by the 4th Street Food Co-op under the legal corporate name Good Harvest Cooperative, Incorporated.

The 4th Street Food Co-op is lower Manhattan's only food cooperative.

Monthly meetings are held, open to all members, where working groups report on the state of the co-op and progress made towards projects and goals. Additionally, members may submit and vote on proposals such as reevaluating pricing and discounts, deciding marketing strategy, and organizing upcoming community and co-op events. Additionally, a large annual meeting is held to discuss major co-op decisions and review the past year.

There are several forms of membership, roughly divided into working and non-working. Working members can work 2.25 hours per week either in-store or as part of a working group and receive a 20% discount on all store purchases, or share such a membership for a 15% discount. The annual fee to be a working member is currently $25. Non-working members do not work, but pay a $35 annual membership fee for 8% off all purchases.

Responsibilities in addition to staffing the store during opening hours are divided into 12 working groups, such as information systems, facilities maintenance, marketing, and an ethics committee.

2012 peanut butter recall


A peanut butter recall was voluntarily issued in September 2012 by Sunland Inc. due to Salmonella.

After further investigation, the recall included all 240 products, made at Sunland's production plant in Portales, New Mexico manufactured since March 1, 2010. A total of 35 people from 19 states were sickened from tainted products, most of them children. Some, but not all, grocery chains affected by the recall were:

The Center for Disease Control (CDC), said the majority of those who became ill claim it was between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012.

Officials from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found salmonella all over plant including improper handling of the products, unclean equipment and uncovered trailers of peanuts outside the facility. The total of people and states rose to 41 people in 20 states sold by Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Safeway, Target and other large grocery chains. On November 26, 2012, the FDA suspended Sunland's registration to produce and distribute food product.

Sunland had the right to a hearing and prove to the FDA that its facilities are clean and can reopen.

Sunland is the nation's largest organic peanut butter processor in the United States.

On October 9, 2013 Sunland closed and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy. According to records, the company has an estimated $10 million to $50 million in assets, $50 million to $100 million in liabilities and 1,000 to 5,000 creditors.

Alnatura


The Alnatura Produktions- und Handels GmbH is a chain of organic food supermarkets headquartered in Bickenbach, Hesse in Germany.

Alnatura currently operates 75 supermarkets in Germany, each with 500 to 800 square meters of retail space, mainly in Baden-Wuerttemberg, Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate. The company's first supermarket opened in Mannheim, Baden-Wuerttemberg on October 1, 1987.

Products of Alnatura are marketed also in the stores of dm-drogerie markt and Tegut. These cooperations make half of the revenue. In 2012 Alnatura began to cooperate with Migros in Switzerland. Their newest collaboration consists of setting up of 30 new Alnatura branches throughout urban centre across Switzerland.

Alvarado Street Bakery is a worker-owned bakery located in Petaluma, California that produces certified organic whole grain breads and bagels. Alvarado was featured in the 2009 Michael Moore documentary, Capitalism: A Love Story.

Alvarado is organized as a worker cooperative and each employee receives one share in the cooperative. The shares grant each employee an equal vote on business matters, including employee benefits, salaries and the reinvestment of profits. As of 2009, more than half of the employees had been with the company for over 15 years and the average worker earns between $65,000 and $70,000 a year.

Alvarado Street Bakery began in 1977 as a part of an employee-owned non-profit business called the Red Clover Worker's Brigade, an umbrella organization for several naturals foods businesses in the San Francisco Bay Area. By 1981 only two businesses still operated, Alvarado Street Bakery and Santa Rosa Community Market. Five of the eight workers of the bakery separated from the market to found the Semper Virens Bakery Food Cooperative, Inc. which does business under the name of Alvarado Street Bakery. The name comes from a knocked over Alvarado Street sign from Venice Beach, Los Angeles from a sprouted wheat berry delivery run.

Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life (2007) is a non-fiction book by Barbara Kingsolver detailing her family's attempt to eat only locally grown food for an entire year.

The book revolves around the concept of improving the family's diet by eating only foods that her family was able to grow themselves or obtain locally (save for grains and olive oil). Kingsolver, along with her husband and daughters, start a farm in Virginia where they grow and can different varieties of tomatoes, learn about rooster husbandry, make cheese, and adjust to eating foods only when they are locally in season. The book contrasts this with the ecological costs of growing food in factory farms, transporting it thousands of miles, and adding chemical preservatives so it will not spoil.

An excerpt was published in the May/June 2007 issue of Mother Jones magazine, and is available online. There are also audio files of a May 16, 2007 discussion between Kingsolver and her husband at an hour-long presentation at a bookstore in Corte Madera, California.

Time magazine's Lev Grossman named it one of the Top 10 Nonfiction Books of 2007, ranking it at #7. Rick Bass wrote in The Boston Globe that "this text will fold quietly into the reader's consciousness, with affecting grace and dignity, because of its prose and sensibilities." and that "Kingsolver is no pious soapboxer, but instead explores these ideas with enthusiasm and the awe of discovery."
