Living Out Loud (song)

imageLiving Out Loud (song)

"Living Out Loud" is a song by Brooke Candy and Sia, released on February 3, 2017. The song serves as the lead single from Candy's upcoming debut studio album Daddy Issues. The KDA remix version of the track was released on December 16, 2016, while the original and proper single version of the track was made available for download and streaming on February 3, 2017.

Candy recorded the song in 2014. She told about working with songwriter and featured artist Sia: "To work with, Sia is very precise, very fast, and very cerebral. Watching her do something is like watching a real artist work. She doesn't overthink anything, it's stream of consciousness, and that's really inspiring. She's definitely one of the women in pop music that's at the forefront of re-adjusting some things and changing the landscape."

About the creative process and the song's creation, Candy also stated: "Sia took the reins writing it over two and a half years ago, and I recorded it then. We’ve mixed and remixed it, and we waited for the right moment [to release it]. I like the sonic composition of it, and it’s interesting having me and Sia sing back and forth to each other. At the time I was getting sober, thinking about changing my lifestyle, finding happiness… So it resonated with me because I was looking for that."

Bradley Stern of PopCrush noted the song as an exploration of pop music for Candy, which differed from her typical rapping.Nylon stated that the production of the song consists on "sugary pop synths" and "danceable club beats" while Justin Moran from Out described it as "power-pop". Lyrically, "Living Out Loud" uses a countdown form, and discusses substance abuse.

Wonderland described "Living Out Loud" as "fearlessly creative", and "infectiously upbeat and uplifting". Bradley Stern from PopCrush noted Candy's change of direction musically, and gave the song a positive review, saying, "what’s wrong with exploring new territory anyway? She’s just living out loud — after all, it’s the only way she knows how". Justin Moran of Out considered the song to be "Candy's first opportunity to break into mainstream music." In contrast, Mike Wass from Idolator made a negative review of the song comparing it with elevator music and called it "[a] chessy pop anthem" stating that it was "really bad".

This Is Acting is the seventh studio album by Australian singer and songwriter Sia. It was released on 29 January 2016 by Inertia, Monkey Puzzle and RCA Records. The album is mostly composed of songs written by Sia for other pop artists that were not included on their albums. Sia described songwriting for others as "play-acting," hence the title This Is Acting.

"Alive", the album's lead single, was released on 24 September 2015. The second single, "Cheap Thrills", was released on 11 February 2016, becoming a top 5 in a number of markets and marking her first number one on the US Billboard Hot 100. The remix of the track featured guest vocals from Sean Paul. A deluxe edition of This Is Acting was released on 21 October 2016 featuring seven new tracks, including the single remix of "Cheap Thrills" and the solo and Kendrick Lamar-assisted versions of "The Greatest". The fourth single, "Move Your Body" was released on 6 January 2017.

The album received generally positive reviews from music critics, who complimented Sia's vocals and deemed it a concept album. However, some criticized the impersonal and indirect nature of the songs. The album debuted at number one in Australia, and also reached number four on the US Billboard 200, selling 81,000 album equivalent units in its first week—of which 68,000 were from pure album sales, becoming Sia's highest first week sales in the country. To further promote the album, Sia embarked on the accompanying Nostalgic for the Present Tour in September 2016. This Is Acting was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Pop Vocal Album.

Move Your Body (Sia song)

imageMove Your Body (Sia song)

"Move Your Body" is a song by Australian singer and songwriter Sia. It was released in January 2017 as the fourth single from her seventh studio album This Is Acting (2016).

"Move Your Body" was originally intended for Shakira, but was rejected. Sia commented on her interview in 2015 with Rolling Stone, saying, "One of them is a Shakira reject, which there's no doubt when you hear it. You'll know that it was a Shakira reject because I sound like Shakira."

Overall response to the song was mixed. Alex McCown-Levy of The A.V. Club wrote: "Move Your Body, [Sia's] attempt at a straight-up Europop dance-floor jam, suffers from a lack of distinction. It's an obvious play for a club hit, but it feels a bit predictable and safe—enjoyable, yes, but so calculated as to be stripped of any sense of engagement, like Robyn on autopilot." Carl Wilson of Billboard called the song "overwhelming", while Lindsay Zolandz of Vulture.com deemed it "the most ridiculous song on This Is Acting."Idolator's Kathy Iandoli argued that the song "makes a valiant attempt to lighten things up a bit." Writing for The Guardian, Kitty Empire said: "There is nothing wrong with [Move Your Body], if you like your pop as gusty as a typhoon."

A lyric video of "Move Your Body" was uploaded on Sia's VEVO account on YouTube on January 12, 2017. The video is set in a photography studio in an American Mall in 1987, and features a girl (portrayed by Lilliana Ketchman) and her parents in a glamour photo shoot until she runs off set, where she finds Sia's signature black-and-blonde wig in a dressing room and tries it on. She then photobombs strangers' posed pictures until her parents drag her away, but the strangers invite her back for even more photos and dance along with her.

Never Give Up (Sia song)

imageNever Give Up (Sia song)

"Never Give Up" is a song recorded by Sia, from the soundtrack of the Garth Davis-directed film, Lion. Written by Sia and its producer Greg Kurstin, it was released on 18 November 2016.

Jon Blistein from Rolling Stone called it an "inspirational anthem." Sam Murphy from Music Feeds said, "Sia taps into the Indian roots of the film by delivering a Bollywood vibe beneath her characteristically sunny undertones." Lars Brandle in Billboard described it as a "powerful and uplifting" number.

An accompanying lyric video was released on 3 January 2017. Inspired by the plot of the film, the clip follows a child and an older child with their faces shrouded, wearing blonde-and-black Sia wigs, searching for each other in a deserted and ominous train station. As the video progresses, the kids reunite, scale a steely locomotive and follow the tracks out of the station and into the night. The song's lyrics appear spray-painted on various surfaces in the yard. Reviewing the clip, Vibe staff wrote the singer "envisioned a journey of hope and faith between two conjoined souls in the visual experience."

Oh Father

imageOh Father

"Oh Father" is a song by American singer Madonna from her fourth studio album Like a Prayer (1989). It was released as the fourth single from the album on October 24, 1989 by Sire Records. The song was not released as a single in most European territories until December 24, 1995, when it appeared on the 1995 ballads compilation Something to Remember. Written and produced by Madonna and Patrick Leonard, the nexus of "Oh Father" was the presence of male authoritative figures in Madonna's life, most prominently her father, Tony Ciccone. Madonna's relationship with her father had soured, after her mother's death in 1963 and his remarriage two years later. While developing the Like a Prayer album, Madonna was in an emotional state of mind due to her personal problems, which is reflected in "Oh Father".

Musically, "Oh Father" is a baroque pop ballad. It was recorded at a studio in the Garment District of New York City. Leonard put together different types of chord progression and created the basic outline of a melody, which Madonna shaped and then wrote lyrics to fit the melody. She used a contrast of timbre while singing the song, which also featured instrumentation from strings, piano, violin and drum machine. "Oh Father" received positive reviews from critics and authors, but commercially was less successful than Madonna's previous singles. In most of the countries where it was released, the song failed to attain top-ten positions, except in Finland and Italy, where it peaked at number six. It ended Madonna's string of 16 consecutive top five singles in the United States.

The music video of the song was Madonna's attempt to embrace and accept her mother's death. Directed by David Fincher and shot in black-and-white, it shows a little girl playing in the snow, as her mother dies. A grown-up Madonna follows the child and sings the song, as the child runs away from her abusive father. Described by reviewers as "autobiographical", the video was listed by Rolling Stone as one of "The 100 Top Music Videos". Scholars noted how Madonna's persona was split into the child and adult in the video, and one writer described a scene involving the dead mother shown in her wake, with her lips sewn shut, as one of the most disturbing scenes in the history of mainstream music videos—the scene was inspired by Madonna's memory of her mother from her funeral. "Oh Father" was performed only on the Blond Ambition World Tour in 1990, where Madonna portrayed a woman trying to find her religion and her battle for it.

This Is Acting is Sia's follow-up to her sixth studio album 1000 Forms of Fear (2014). In December 2014, Sia told Spin that she had "two [more records] completed and ready to go". She revealed details of This Is Acting for the first time in an interview published by NME in February 2015. In the article, she confirmed once again that work on the album was finished and that its content was "more pop" than her previous material. She also revealed that the success of 1000 Forms of Fear, specifically its lead single "Chandelier", encouraged her to continue releasing new material, and said of the album's title: "I'm calling it This Is Acting because they are songs I was writing for other people, so I didn't go in thinking 'this is something I would say'. It's more like play-acting. It's fun." The album's cover art features Sia's face digitally altered. Shortly after Sia's announcement, Out published a list of her "10 Greatest Hits for Other Artists" in anticipation of the album.

Reaper (song)

imageReaper (song)

"Reaper" is a song from Australian singer and songwriter Sia's seventh studio album This Is Acting (2016). The song was co-written by Sia, Kanye West, Noah Goldstein, Charles Misodi Njapa (better known by his stage name 88-Keys), and Dom $olo, originally for Rihanna's album Anti (2016). "Reaper" was co-produced by West, Dom $olo, Goldstein, 88-Keys, Jesse Shatkin, and Jake Sinclair. Sia and West had previously collaborated on the latter's song "Wolves".

In January 2016, Sia revealed the track listing for This Is Acting by having theaters around the world display songs and track numbers on their marquees. The songs "Reaper" and "House on Fire" were confirmed as the seventh and eighth tracks, respectively, on the marquee of Webster Hall, which is located near Astor Place, in the East Village of Manhattan, New York City. "Reaper" was released as a promotional single that month.

Sia said of "Reaper", "I don't care about the song. I know in print that will look bad, but what I mean is I'm not emotionally attached to it. I thought it was a fun song. I think it's a good, fun song, but I didn't anticipate it being on the record."

Sia performed the song on Good Morning America.

Alex Kritselis of Bustle wrote, "After hearing "Reaper" — a mid-tempo, sunshine-y anthem about... cheating death? — it's easy to understand Sia's indifference. It's a catchy tune, sure — but it doesn't make much of an impact. I'm not at all surprised Rihanna passed on it. (It's not a bad song, by any means, but it's just kinda... there.)"

Satisfied (Hamilton song)

"Satisfied" is the eleventh song from Act 1 of the musical Hamilton, based on the life of Alexander Hamilton, which premiered on Broadway in 2015. Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote both the music and lyrics to the song. The song is sung by the character Angelica Schuyler, originally performed by Renée Elise Goldsberry.

On Twitter, Lin-Manuel Miranda posted a real letter from Angelica to Alexander Hamilton that inspired the song's lyrics: "You are happy my dear friend to find consolation in 'words & thoughts.' I cannot be so easily satisfied."

Miranda told The Hollywood Reporter, "The lyrics...are some of the most intricate I've ever written. I can't even rap them, but Renée Elise Goldsberry, who plays Angelica — that's her conversational speed. That's how fast she thinks. You really get the sense that Angelica's the smartest person in the room, and she reads Hamilton within a moment of meeting him."

"Satisfied" begins with Angelica Schuyler's wedding toast for Alexander Hamilton and Eliza (her sister), then proceeds to rewind and retell the events of the previous song, "Helpless," from her own perspective. She, who in "The Schuyler Sisters" had declared was looking for a "mind at work", has now found it in Hamilton yet is forced to give it up for the sake of her sister.

On Stage explains: "in a truly inspired piece of staging that literally made my jaw drop, the scene rewinds around Angelica before your eyes, taking us back to the beginning of 'Helpless'—except now we’re seeing that fateful first meeting of the Schuyler sisters and Hamilton from Angelica’s point of view."

Although Hamilton is based on true events, Miranda does use some dramatic license in retelling the story. In the case of the song “Satisfied” the main differences are:

• During "Satisfied", Angelica explains why Hamilton is not suitable for her despite wanting him. In particular, she states, "I'm a girl in a world in which my only job is to marry rich. My father has no sons so I'm the one who has to social climb for one." In actuality, Angelica had less pressure on her to do this. Philip Schuyler actually had fifteen children, including two sons who survived into adulthood (one of whom was New York State Assemblyman Philip Jeremiah Schuyler).

She Wolf (Falling to Pieces)

imageShe Wolf (Falling to Pieces)

"She Wolf (Falling to Pieces)" is a song performed by French DJ and music producer David Guetta, featuring vocals from Australian singer Sia. It was released as the lead single from the re-release of Nothing But the Beat, Nothing But the Beat 2.0, and tallies as the album's seventh single overall. It was released via digital download on August 21, 2012.

Prior to its official release on August 21, 2012, an EP of remixes of the track, featuring contributions from Michael Calingham and Sandro Silva, was made available for a short time exclusively via Beatport, on August 7, 2012. The official release then followed on August 21, 2012, before the track was issued in the form of CD single and 12" vinyl in Germany on August 24, 2012. The single was released in the United Kingdom on September 10, 2012, on the date of the album's release. It peaked at #8 on the UK Singles Chart. Although this song failed to chart the US Billboard Hot 100, it topped the Billboard Hot Dance Club Songs chart, making it Guetta's seventh number-one on the chart.

On September 21, 2012, a lyric video for the track was uploaded to Guetta's official VEVO channel. On September 26, 2012, a trailer for the music video was released, with an official premiere date of October 3, 2012, revealed. An official video for the track was uploaded to Guetta's official VEVO channel on September 28, 2012.

The video starts off with a shot of a naked woman, then it moves on to a wounded wolf running from a handful of human hunters. It is shown that the wolf is supernatural, as it is able to make the hunters "explode" on every breakdown of the song. The "explosions" depict the hunters and the landscape as composed by tiny polygons, as if everything were part of a computer simulated reality. At the end of the music video, the canine then transforms back into the naked woman at the start. The video tells a story- both the video and the lyrics - the she-wolf was once a woman who fell for and loved the hunter, but was shunned because of his guilt when he lay with her - giving into the "sin". The man turned on her and wounded her, and she fell to pieces, becoming the she wolf. Her softness vanished, replaced by razor sharp edges. Cornered and wounded, the wolf destroys those who would kill her heart. The woman may mourn afterwards, looking out across a desolate sea, but the she-wolf survives. She will always survive. This is the second time that neither Guetta nor Sia make an appearance in the video.
