List of breweries in Scotland

This is a list of breweries in Scotland. Beer has been produced in Scotland for approximately 5,000 years. The Celtic tradition of using bittering herbs remained in Scotland longer than the rest of Europe. Most breweries developed in the central Lowlands, which also contained the main centres of population. Scottish brewing reached a peak of 280 breweries in 1840. The merger of breweries led to changes, the higher hop content of some of the beers allowed them to travel better than previous products thus creating a higher quality product for export. Edinburgh and Alloa in particular became noted centres for the export of beer around the world. By 1920, there were only 62 brewers left. The decline continued so that by 1960 there were only 26 and by 1970, they had dropped to just 11.

At the end of the twentieth century, small breweries had begun to spring up all over Scotland and the decline was reversed. The CAMRA Good Beer Guide 2015 states that Scotland is home to 80 breweries. Many of the breweries creating world-class and award-winning beers.

Belhaven Brewery

imageBelhaven

Belhaven brewery is a brewery near Dunbar in Scotland owned by Greene King.

Belhaven claims to have begun brewing in 1719. In that year the burgh of Dunbar levied a local tax on brewers to fund civic improvements. Since Belhaven's site is immediately outside the limits controlled by the then Dunbar Council, and hence would be free of the 'impost' or tax, it is possible that the 1719 date records the relocation of an existing business. In the first half of the 18th century Belhaven had more than 24 small and large competitors nearby in Dunbar, Belhaven and West Barns. Only three, the Dunbar, Belhaven (then called Johnstone's and later Dudgeon's) and West Barns breweries survived until the middle of the 19th century and only Belhaven lasted through the 20th, in part due to its small scale of production and its much larger malting capacity. The history of brewing in Dunbar, however, goes much further back - all the way to the 1200s with the founding of a site for agriculture, malting and brewing by Benedictine monks who were based on the Isle of May.

The manager's house (which sits to the west side of the approach lane) was built c.1790 but extended several times. It has been detached from the brewery for at least 50 years and is currently under private ownership. Its grounds include a small pedimented folly screening the brewery from the house. Its entrance gates were previously the jaw-bones of a whale (as also found on nearby North Berwick Law) but these have eroded to stumps.

By 2005 Belhaven had become the largest and oldest surviving independent brewery in Scotland. In August 2005, the Suffolk based brewery Greene King announced a £187 million takeover bid for Belhaven. This offer was accepted and completed by November 2005. Greene King has stated that Belhaven will retain its brands and brewery following the takeover.

Belhaven brew a range of around 20 beers for sale domestically and overseas. The biggest and best-known in Scotland is Belhaven Best, which was launched in 1991 and by 2001 had become Scotland's best-selling ale, a position it retains to this day. Belhaven Best is widely distributed in Scotland on draught and in cans. The brewery's range also includes Belhaven Black Scottish Stout, traditional Scottish ales such as 80 Shilling, St Andrew's Amber Ale, Belhaven IPA and Robert Burns Brown Ale; and in 2014 Belhaven launched a range of speciality craft beers including Twisted Thistle IPA, Speyside Oak Aged Blonde Ale, Craft Pilsner, Scottish Oat Stout and Belhaven Scottish Ale. These are available in bottles and in some cases on draught.

Brewmeister (brewery)

Keith Brewery LTD is a Scottish brewery based in Keith, Moray, formerly known as Brewmeister. It was founded in 2012, and has subsequently grown to export worldwide.

The brewery began life on a farm in Royal Deeside, Aberdeenshire with a student loan. The first beer produced was Armageddon, which the company claimed in press releases was the world's strongest beer at 65% alcohol by volume (ABV). Some batches of the beer were incorrectly manufactured to a strength of 15.2% ABV.

In 2013, Brewmeister replaced Armageddon with a stronger beer called Snake Venom claiming 67.5% ABV, and put a warning label on the bottle advising consumers to only drink one per sitting. It retailed at £50 for a 275ml bottle. Brewmeister claimed that the beer "tastes like a liquor and has a whole host of different flavours, ranging from bubblegum to caramel." However, Guinness Book of Records still consider the strongest beer ever sold the Brewdog's "The End of History" with 55% ABV.

In March 2014, the company announced they would move to new facilities at the Isla Bank Mills in Keith and quadruple beer production while in May of the same year, the company won the BQ Scottish Business Award for Export.Richard Lochhead, member of Scottish Parliament for Keith, said that the move would be "a successful addition to Moray's strong food and drinks sector." The brewery currently employs 13 people.

The strength of the beer comes from fractional freezing, which involves cooling the beer to a low temperature to the point where water freezes but alcohol does not. The ice is then removed, leaving a higher percentage of alcohol behind. The company claims to use natural spring water for brewing and claims to use unusual ingredients in their beers. In 2014, they announced that 90% of their product was being exported.

In 2014 the Advertising Standards Agency censured Brewmeister for misleading advertising, stating that it was possibly ethyl alcohol that had been added to Snake Venom to reach the desired ABV of 67.5%.

In 2014, Brewmeister re-launched following the formation of a Board of Directors which came about after Brewmeister was partially bought by a syndicate of Scottish business figures. This included Scott Carnegie, a former Chairman of Dundee United Football Club. Brewmeister also received investment from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Scottish Enterprise and the Scottish Investment Bank. Scottish Enterprise are also holders of shares in the company.

Caledonian Brewery

imageCaledonian Brewery

Caledonian Brewery is a Scottish brewery founded in 1869 in Shandon, Edinburgh, Scotland.

When it was founded in 1869, the brewery was named the Lorimer and Clark Caledonian Brewery, after its founders George Lorimer and Robert Clark.

George Lorimer was just 18 years old when his father (George Lorimer Snr.) died in a fire at Edinburgh's Theatre Royal in 1865. Young George was a keen golfer and member of the Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society - which met at the Golf Tavern and played on the adjacent Bruntsfield Links. It was through spending time at the Golf Tavern that George became friends with many of Edinburgh's leading brewers; including Thomas Aitchison, George Bernard and Robert Clark.

In 1868, George Lorimer came of age and inherited his father's estate. George was determined to use the money to start his own brewery. He enlisted the help of Robert Clark, then Head Brewer at the Alexander Melvin Brewery in Edinburgh and together they opened Lorimer and Clark's Caledonian Brewery on the Slateford Road site. In 1892, to designs by the architect Robert Hamilton Paterson, buildings on the site were re-constructed and new brewery and maltings buildings erected.

Although the brewery sold its beers and a number of stouts all over Scotland, its most popular beer was Lorimer's Best Scotch, which was sold predominantly in the north-east of England.

On George Lorimer’s death in 1919, The Caledonian Brewery passed into the hands of Sunderland-based Vaux Breweries, who developed Lorimer’s Best Scotch brand into one of the most popular beers in the North East of England. In 1986 they decided to cease brewing in Edinburgh and transfer the operation to their base in Sunderland.

Eventually neglect and lack of investment took their toll and placed the brewery under threat of closure. In 1987, the brewery was saved through a management buy-out led by Head Brewer Russell Sharp.

In 2004, the brewery site and production facilities were bought by Scottish & Newcastle (S&N), following their closure of the McEwan's Brewery in Fountainbridge, Edinburgh. Production of McEwan's ales has been transferred to the Caledonian Brewery.

Eden Brewery St Andrews

Eden Mill St Andrews is a specialist independent microbrewery and distillery based in Guardbridge, Scotland, about 3 miles (5 km) north-west of St Andrews. It is located on a 38-acre site owned by the University of St Andrews. Brewing began in July 2012 and the brewery was "on track to lift turnover from £500,000 in its first full year to around £2 million in 2014".

Eden Mill became Scotland's first combined brewery and distillery when they began the production of Scotch whisky and gin in 2014.

The site of the brewery is on the banks of the Eden Estuary and has had a long history of brewing and distilling. For most of the 19th century, the Haig Family operated a whisky distillery here. In 1860, they started distilling whisky elsewhere in Fife, and turned the site into a brewery and paper mill. The brewery closed in 1882. The last brewery in St Andrews closed soon after, in 1902. The paper mill closed in 2008.

Eden Mill St Andrews produce bottled beers such as Traditional Ales, IPA and Craft Lagers. Many of these beers are also for sale in casks.

Eden Mill St Andrews produces a range of gins, blended whiskies and single malt scotch.

The 'Art of the Blend' range of whiskies have been finished off in different barrel types and sizes for approximately one year.

Single malt whiskies released in 20cl bottles, with different cask finishes and malt bills.
