Nile Breweries Limited

Nile Breweries Limited (NBL) imports and manufactures beer and produces purified drinking water in Uganda.

The NBL's headquarters and main brewery are in the town of Njeru in Buikwe District, approximately 6 kilometres (4 mi) north-east of the central business district of Jinja, Uganda. This is approximately 77 kilometres (48 mi), by road, east of Kampala, the capital and largest city of Uganda. The coordinates of the company headquarters are 0°26'19.0"N, 33°10'47.0"E (Latitude:0.438620; Longitude:33.179720).

NBL had an estimated 52 percent share of the Ugandan beer market in 2013.

Eagle Lager was launched to promote the use of locally grown sorghum to make lager beers and to reduce reliance on imported raw materials. Brand extensions now include an Eagle Extra and Eagle Dark.

NBL started in 1951 as a single brewery in Jinja. The brewery was nationalised in 1972 by Idi Amin. In 1997, South African Breweries bought a 40 percent share in the brewery, raising this to full ownership in July 2001.

In October 2013, NBL opened a new brewery in Mbarara, about 250 kilometres (155 mi), south-west of Kampala. Built at a cost of US$90.6 million (about UGX:235 billion), the brewery was projected to produce 5.5 million crates of beers annually. The new brewery uses sorghum, maize, and barley, which are grown mostly by farmers in the region. The products of this brewery are marketed locally and exported to South Sudan and the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A maltings plant with a 120-ton piece size was built on the brewery site at Jinja in 2011 to support a local barley growing initiative and to supply barley malt to the brewery. Involved in this construction was Excel Construction Limited, formed in 1992 as a joint venture company between the Madhvani Group and Gomba Construction Company Ltd.

As of 2013, Nile Breweries had ten locally produced beer brands (Nile Special, Nile Gold, Club Pilsener, Castle Lite, Castle Milk Stout, Eagle Lager, Eagle Extra, Eagle Dark, Redd's, and Chairman's ESB), one locally produced traditional African beer (Chibuku), two imported lagers (Castle Lager and Grolsch), one ready-to-drink product (Redd's Vodka Lemon), and one bottled water brand (Rwenzori Mineral Water).

Pito (beer)

Pito is a type of beer made from fermented millet or sorghum in northern Ghana, parts of Nigeria, and other parts of West Africa. It is made by small (household-level) producers, and is typically served in a calabash outside the producer's home where benches are sometimes provided.

Pito can be served warm or cold. Warm pito gets its heat from the fermentation process. Pito brewing can provide an important source of income for otherwise cash-poor households in rural areas. It is never found bottled or canned, and, as a rule, is purchased directly from the household in which it is brewed.

Southern Sudan Beverages Limited

imageSouthern Sudan Beverages Limited

Southern Sudan Beverages Limited is a brewery based in South Sudan and owned by SABMiller. The brands that are manufactured are White Bull, Nile Special and Club Pilsner pale lager beer. The Company also produces soft drinks such as Club Cola, Club Berry, Club Lemmon,Club Pineapple, Club Orange, and Club Apple . In addition to soft dinks and beer, the Company also produces spirits such as Konyagi Gin, Vladimir Vodka, Regency Whisky and Valeur Brandy.

SABMiller has an investment in the company while it was within the jurisdiction of Sudan. It built a ~£32 million factory in Juba, making it the first manufacturing facility in the country and came despite competition from imported beers from Kenya and Uganda.

The initial plans to start a brewery had begun in 2006 before the launch in 2009. The company's initial challenges included logistics as material to build the first factory needed to be driven into the country from Mombasa, Kenya including two second hand brewery machines from Malta and Bulgaria and a power plant needed to be built, while the only ingredient of beer available was local water from the Nile and the over 250 workers who had mostly never been employed before needed to be trained from scratch.

The malted barley, hops and yeast are imported but there were plans to work with local farmers to start brewing with cassava. The factory has a capacity to produce 180,000hl of clear beer and 60,000hl of carbonated soft drinks annually. The flagship White Bull's colours are yellow, green and white and are served in heavy brown bottles. It is also illegally available in Khartoum, Sudan. Production started in May 2009. Ian Alsworth-Elvey is the inaugural managing director of the company. A new Managing Director, Carlos Gomes was appointed to take over the business in March 2015.

This was, however, not the first attempt to build a brewery in the country after Belgium's SYBETRA built the White Nile Brewery in Wau in 1983, but the Sudanese government did not license the project due to sharia law.

Three Horses Beer

imageThree Horses Beer (THB)

Three Horses Beer (better known locally as THB) is a pale lager that has been brewed by Star Breweries of Madagascar since 1958. It is the highest selling beer in Madagascar and has been described as emblematic of the country. THB is sold nationwide and since 2005 has been exported to such markets as France, Reunion Island, Comoros and Mayotte. The Malagasy beer is produced at two breweries in Madagascar, the first centrally located in Antsirabe and the other in the northern city of Antsiranana. THB Pilsener, the most common variant of THB, has a light taste and is produced from mostly local barley, corn and hops. Star Breweries also produces THB Fresh (a shandy with less than 1% alcohol), THB Special (6.2% alcohol), and THB Lite (1% alcohol). Recent investments in Star Brewery infrastructure have allowed a 20% increase in production since 2011.

After advertising alcohol in the media was banned under former President Marc Ravalomanana, Star Breweries has increasingly promoted THB through unconventional means. These have included sponsoring the THB Champions League, Madagascar's national football championship, and holding annual beer festivals. In addition, THB is a regular sponsor of local musicians through major annual festivals and tours. Star Breweries has also hired musicians to perform in music videos specifically created to promote the beer. In 2014 the THB label was significantly redesigned, and in 2015 a new slogan, "THB eo foana e!" ("THB always!") was promoted alongside the beer's longstanding trademark Soa Ny Fiarahantsika ("The Pleasure of Being Together"). The beer is regularly promoted by Malagasy musical stars and other public figures.

In 1953 the French company Rochefortaise launched Société Tananarivienne d’Articles Réfrigérés (STAR) (Antananarivo Company of Refrigerated Products) and its associated factory in Antananarivo, Madagascar, for the exclusive production and distribution of Coca-Cola in Madagascar. In 1957, a brewer was recruited to develop a local beer. After developing 17 different recipes, he travelled throughout the island to test each one using primarily local ingredient; the best of these was a pilsener chosen as the recipe to be produced at a Star brewery to be established in Antsirabe. The company first began producing Three Horses Beer (THB) in 1958.

Umqombothi

imageUmqombothi

Umqombothi (Xhosa pronunciation: [um̩k͡ǃomboːtʰi]), from the Xhosa language, is a beer made from maize (corn), maize malt, sorghum malt, yeast and water. It is commonly found in South Africa. It is very rich in Vitamin B. The beer has a rather low alcohol content (usually less than 3%) and is known to have a heavy and distinctly sour aroma. In appearance, the beer is opaque and light tan in colour. It has a thick, creamy and gritty consistency (from the maize).

Umqombothi is cheaper than commercial lager beers, that are brewed from barley and flavoured with hops flowers.

Umqombothi is brewed following traditional customs and these vary slightly between regions. The recipe is often passed down through the generations. The beer is traditionally prepared over a fire outside of the house. It then passively cools to ambient temperatures outside the house.

The ingredients used are: equal measures of maize meal, crushed mealie malt (corn malt) and crushed sorghum malt. The maize malt provides a lighter-toned beer with a mellower flavour. The sorghum malt provides a darker beer.

The ingredients are mixed in a cast-iron pot, known as a potjie in South Africa. Four measures of warm water are added. The mixture is left overnight. The mixture starts fermenting and bubbles appear. A sour odour can be detected.

A small portion of the wort is removed and put to one side. The remaining mash is cooked until a crusty sediment forms. This product is known as isidudu and can be eaten as a porridge. When making beer, the isidudu is left to cool for a day.

After the mixture has cooled, it is poured into a large plastic vat. The wort that was set aside is added to the vat. A handful of sorghum malt and a handful of maize malt is added to the vat. The brew is stirred with a traditional stirring spoon called an iphini. The vat is covered with a lid and blanket (to retain heat). The vat is put in a warm place overnight, to encourage fermentation.
