241 Pizza

241 Pizza (2006) Ltd., doing business as 241 Pizza, is a Canadian franchise chain of pizza restaurants headquartered in Scarborough, Toronto.

There are 62 locations across Ontario, particularly in the Southern Ontario. There are also locations Newfoundland and Saskatchewan. 241 Pizza competes with other pizza chains such as Pizza Pizza, Pizza Hut, Little Caesars, and Pizza Nova. However, 241 Pizza is mutually exclusive with the American Papa John's chain, with restaurants in Canada only existing in Alberta, Ontario, and the Maritimes. Coffee Time's parent company Chairman's Brand Corp. acquired 241 Pizza in October 2006.

Boston Pizza

imageBoston Pizza

Boston Pizza (also known as BP and, in the United States and Mexico, as Boston's) is a Canadian-based restaurant chain that owns and franchises locations in Canada, the United States and Mexico.

Boston Pizza began in Edmonton, Alberta, on August 12, 1964, when a Greek immigrant, Gus Agioritis, opened Boston Pizza and Spaghetti House. By 1970, Boston Pizza had 17 locations in Western Canada, 15 of which were franchised.

One of the first franchisees was Jim Treliving, a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer. In 1968, he noticed the growing popularity of Boston Pizza and purchased the rights to open a restaurant in Penticton, British Columbia. While in Penticton, he met George Melville, a chartered accountant. He acted as Treliving's business consultant for four years, and, in 1973, became Treliving's business partner. Over 10 years, they opened 16 restaurants in British Columbia.

In 1983, Treliving and Melville acquired the Boston Pizza chain from Ron Coyle, who had acquired the company from Agioritis in 1978. The two divested 15 of their restaurants to other franchisees, converted one restaurant to a corporate training restaurant and set about establishing systems and operating standards to standardize company operations. In the early 1980s, Boston Pizza expanded into Eastern Canada but by late 1985 most, if not all restaurants in Ontario were closed. In 1986, Boston Pizza became the official pizza supplier for Expo 86 in Vancouver. This major success for the company led to expansion in Eastern Canada. In the next two years, it led to another 17 franchises.

By 1995, the chain had grown to 95 restaurants in Western Canada with sales in excess of $110 million (CAD). Over the many years the restaurants had become a success, more sports bars had been established as an integral part of the business.

In 1997, Mark Pacinda was hired to bring the chain to more eastern areas of Canada. Once an Eastern Office was opened in Mississauga, another restaurant was opened in Ottawa in September 1998. The company later opened a regional office in Laval, Quebec, in April 2004. As of December 2012, there are 348 Boston Pizza restaurants in Canada, and over 40 in the U.S. and Mexico.

Freshslice Pizza

imageFreshslice Pizza

Freshslice Pizza is a Canadian franchised pizza chain in restaurants located throughout British Columbia, and one location in Toronto as of 2016. The first restaurant opened in 1999 in Vancouver, British Columbia. Today, Freshslice Pizza is the second-largest pizza chain in British Columbia behind Panago in terms of locations open.

Ray J. Russell established Freshslice Pizza with a purpose of developing a new fast-food concept. His goal was to combine pizza delivery with self-serve dining. In the Freshslice franchising model, franchisees pay 0% royalty rates and 0% marketing royalties.

Freshslice was awarded the Consumer Choice Awards for Business Excellence in 2007, 2008 and 2009. In 2013 it was awarded the Best By The Slice in Vancouver by Georgia Straight Magazine.

The chain is currently upgrading all existing locations with a new interior look, "Vision 2020".

In 2011 the company was issued a court order to pay $44,000 for hiring illegal workers. Companies owned by Freshslice Pizza founder Ray Russell, his wife Isabella Flores and corporate employee Bahman Afshari were all charged by the Canada Border Services Agency after a tip led to the discovery that over a dozen undocumented refugees were employed at Freshslice locations in Vancouver. Afshari was also personally charged. In 2012, JM Food Services, a company operating under Ray Russell, was involved with legal action against a former multiple-unit franchisee, Canada Businet Co. LTD regarding their closure of multiple Freshslice Pizza locations located in both British Columbia and Ontario.

In 2013, Ray Russell was found liable for over $40,000 for damages related to unpaid rent and related costs to R.T.M Holdings LTD. During the court proceedings it was also revealed that a corporate location owned by Mr Russell remained in operation to the public despite sewage repeatedly backing into the restaurant. In 2014 Russell was found guilty by the B.C Supreme Court of wrongful dismissal of a corporate employee. The courts ordered a judgement of over $40,000 to the former employee.

Greco Pizza Restaurant

imageGreco Pizza Restaurant

Greco Pizza Restaurant is a franchise restaurant chain consisting of over 100 outlets in Eastern Canada. The restaurants also deliver pizza. Greco bills itself as the largest pizza chain in Atlantic Canada.

The first Greco Pizza restaurant opened in 1977 in Moncton, New Brunswick as Greco Donair...and Pizza. In 1981, the franchise rights were sold to Grinner's Food Systems Ltd. of Truro, Nova Scotia.

Many Greco locations in rural areas are known as "Greco Express" outlets; they are typically associated with a motel, convenience store, or other existing establishment. In some locations, the Greco franchise is associated with a Captain Submarine franchise, another of Grinner's properties.

Since 1995, Greco has marketed itself using the telephone number 310-30-30 with an associated jingle. From 1995 to the early 2000s, this number was pronounced in the official jingle as "three one oh, three oh, three oh". In the early 2000s, this was changed to "three ten, thirty thirty".

King of Donair

King of Donair (KOD) is a restaurant chain founded in the early 1970s in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The first store on Quinpool Road serviced a broad clientele into the early morning hours when few eating establishments were open. KOD serves a wide range of food, including the Halifax (or Maritime) donair,(sometimes served open-faced, with cheese), and pizza (including donair pizza).

Now a staple at many pizzerias in Atlantic Canada, King of Donair claims to have invented the Maritime donair — a variation on the traditional Middle Eastern doner kebab in 1973. Maritime donairs are characterized by their distinctive sauce, a sweeter version of a traditional garlic sauce, made from evaporated milk, sugar, garlic or garlic powder, and white vinegar. Traditional garlic sauce is usually made with yogurt or mayonnaise instead of evaporated milk and vinegar; it also has lemon juice rather than sugar. Donair sauce is a popular dipping sauce for garlic fingers (another regional dish).

As of 2008, KOD has six locations throughout the Halifax Regional Municipality, as well as locations in New Brunswick. It has been prominently featured in episodes of the hit TV series Trailer Park Boys, in which the character Randy (played by Patrick Roach) frequently visits for donairs, such as the episode "A Man's Gotta Eat", where he prostitutes himself in front of a store for coupons.

In 2012, the King of Donair at Pizza Corner, one of their most popular locations, was forced to move, leaving the local landmark with only two pizzerias.

Little Caesars

imageLittle Caesar Enterprises Inc.

Little Caesar Enterprises Inc. (doing business as Little Caesars) is the third-largest pizza chain in the United States, behind Pizza Hut and Domino's Pizza. The Little Caesars headquarters is located in the Fox Theatre building in Downtown Detroit, Michigan. It operates franchises internationally in Asia, the Middle East, Australia, Canada, Latin America and the Caribbean.

Little Caesars Pizza was founded on May 8, 1959, by Detroit Tigers farm team shortstop Mike Ilitch (1929–2017) and his wife (since 1955) Marian Ilitch (1933– ). The first location was in a strip mall in Garden City, Michigan, a suburb of Detroit. Mike wanted to call it simply "Pizza Treat," but Marian wanted a name that would be more suitable. Marian considered Mike her "little Caesar". Mike ultimately relented, and the store opened as "Little Caesar's Pizza Treat." The original store is still open today.

The company is famous for its advertising catchphrase, "Pizza! Pizza!" which was introduced in 1979. The phrase refers to two pizzas being offered for the comparable price of a single pizza from competitors. Originally, the pizzas were served in a single long package (a piece of corrugated cardboard in 2-by-1 proportions, with two square pizzas placed side by side, then slid into a form-fitting paper sleeve that was folded and stapled closed). In addition to pizza, they served hot dogs, chicken, shrimp, and fish. Little Caesars has discarded the unwieldy packaging in favor of typical pizza boxes.

In 1998, Little Caesars filled what was then the largest pizza order, filling an order of 13,386 pizzas from the VF Corporation of Greensboro, North Carolina.

Starting in 2004, the chain began offering "Hot-N-Ready", a large pepperoni pizza sold for $5. The concept was successful enough to become a permanent fixture of the chain, and Little Caesars' business model has shifted to focus more on carryout.
