Fast-food restaurant

A fast food restaurant, also known as a quick service restaurant (QSR) within the industry, is a specific type of restaurant that serves fast food cuisine and has minimal table service. The food served in fast food restaurants is typically part of a "meat-sweet diet", offered from a limited menu, cooked in bulk in advance and kept hot, finished and packaged to order, and usually available for take away, though seating may be provided at the restaurant. Fast food restaurants are typically part of a restaurant chain or franchise operation that provisions standardized ingredients and/or partially prepared foods and supplies to each restaurant through controlled supply channels. The term "fast food" was recognized in a dictionary by Merriam–Webster in 1951.

Arguably, the first fast food restaurants originated in the United States with A&W in 1919 and White Castle in 1921. Today, American-founded fast food chains such as McDonald's (est. 1940) and KFC (est. 1952) are multinational corporations with outlets across the globe.

Variations on the fast food restaurant concept include fast casual restaurants and catering trucks. Fast casual restaurants have higher sit-in ratios, and customers can sit and have their orders brought to them. Catering trucks often park just outside worksites and are popular with factory workers.

Some trace the modern history of fast food in America to 7 July 1912, with the opening of a fast food restaurant called the Automat in New York. The Automat was a cafeteria with its pre-prepared foods behind small glass windows and coin-operated slots. Joseph Horn and Frank Hardart had already opened the first Horn & Hardart Automat in Philadelphia in 1902, but their "Automat" at Broadway and 13th Street, in New York City, created a sensation. Numerous Automat restaurants were built around the country to deal with the demand. Automats remained extremely popular throughout the 1920s and 1930s. The company also popularized the notion of "take-out" food, with their slogan "Less work for Mother".

Doughnuts

imageDoughnut

A doughnut or donut (both: /ˈdoʊnət/ or /ˈdoʊnʌt/; see spelling differences) is a type of fried dough confectionery or dessert food. The doughnut is popular in many countries and prepared in various forms as a sweet snack that can be homemade or purchased in bakeries, supermarkets, food stalls, and franchised speciality outlets. Doughnuts are usually deep-fried from a flour dough, and typically either ring-shaped or without a hole, and often filled. Other types of batters can also be used, and various toppings and flavourings are used for different types, such as sugar, chocolate, or maple glazing. In addition to flour, doughnuts may also include such ingredients as water, leavening, eggs, milk, sugar, oil/shortening, natural flavours and/or artificial flavours.

The two most common types are the ring doughnut and the filled doughnut—which is injected with fruit preserves, cream, custard, or other sweet fillings. A small spherical piece of dough may be cooked as a doughnut hole. Once doughnuts have been fried, they may be glazed with a sugar icing, spread with icing or chocolate, or topped with powdered sugar or sprinkles or fruit. Other shapes include rings, balls, and flattened spheres, as well as ear shapes, twists and other forms. Doughnut varieties are also divided into cake and yeast-risen type doughnuts. Doughnuts are often accompanied by coffee when they are purchased at doughnut shops or fast food restaurants.

Bess Eaton

Bess Eaton or Bess Eaton Management LLC is a small chain of coffee shops based in southern New England, often serving doughnuts, bagels, and muffins. The firm licensed the Bess Eaton trademark in 2011 from Wendy's, which had acquired the previous Bess Eaton chain out of bankruptcy in 2004. As of 2016, there are five locations stretching from Groton, Connecticut to Galilee, Rhode Island.

The Bess Eaton Donut Flour Company was founded in 1953 by Angelo (Bangy) Gencarelli Jr. and was known for its coffee and hand-cut donuts. The corporate headquarters were located in Westerly, Rhode Island, with up to 56 retail shops spread between Rhode Island, Massachusetts, and Connecticut. At one time, it was Rhode Island's seventh largest private employer of 750 workers and 650 workers at the chain's sale. Throughout the chain's 50-year history, the company was privately held by the Gencarelli family. In the last year of operations, the firm was focusing on wholesale business and non-store locations to boost profits, but ultimately was sold to Tim Hortons of Canada. Leading up to the company's sale, then CEO, Louis A. Gencarelli, Sr., made headlines printing Biblical scripture verses on the company's cups and product packaging.

In its last decade of operation, the Bess Eaton Donut Flour Company faced many internal difficulties including problems with its financial records. As a result, the firm sold its retail division in mid-2004 following bankruptcy litigation. With a reported $35 million bid, the fast-food chain Wendy's International Corporation prevailed over the Dunkin' Donuts chain in their competition to purchase the 48 defunct Bess Eaton stores and other assets. Within two months of acquisition, Wendy's had converted 42 of those stores to their Tim Hortons brand. In conjunction with the sale, Bess Eaton closed its production facility and corporate headquarters. Wendy's sold Tim Hortons in 2006, but kept ownership of the Bess Eaton trademark.

Beurger King Muslim

Beurger King Muslim (or BKM) is a fast-food restaurant launched in July 2005. The restaurant aims to mimic American fast food restaurants. It first set up a branch in the suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, Paris (France), offering hamburgers, French fries, sundaes, cola and doughnuts. The beef and chicken used in their burgers are halal - meaning they are made with meat slaughtered according to Islamic dietary laws. It is located in the eastern Paris suburb of Clichy-sous-Bois, where many locals are first- or second-generation Muslim immigrants from former French colonies.

The word "Beur" is a French slang word for the second generation of North Africans living in France. "Beur" means "Arab". The word Beurger, therefore, is a play on words, appropriate as the majority of the clients and owners of BKM are from North Africa.

Beurger King Muslim's significance stems from the fact all the food served is halal. Halal - meaning fit to eat - has to be prepared in specific ways as deemed by Islamic laws. This is part of the Muslim ritual rules for food, that include a prohibition on pork. The restaurant substitutes pork-related dishes with other meats, for example, the bacon cheeseburger is made with smoked turkey. Various sauces and spices used by the restaurant are monitored to ensure that they are not made with alcohol or fats from animals prohibited from Islamic laws. Representatives from an independent certification services come to the restaurant every week to ensure that the restaurant uses halal ingredients.

Churromania, based in Miami, Florida, is a Venezuelan chain of Churro stores founded by Ariel Acosta Rubio and his wife, Maria Alejandra Bravo, in 1997. Churromania specializes in different styles of churros, but also serves hot chocolate, coffee and an assortment of Pepsi brand beverages, alongside specialised products from specified states.

Churromania has more than 120 franchises across 6 different countries, including Venezuela, the United States, the Dominican Republic and other Latin American nations.

Ariel Acosta-Rubio and Maria Alejandra Bravo opened their first churro stand in Puerto La Cruz, a beach town four hours away from the capital of Venezuela. After experiencing mild success in the endeavor they set themselves a goal to "take Churromania to each corner of Venezuela and the World." They spent the next nine months devising the perfection for the dough ingredients and, by the time the recipe was complete, they were able to open a new store.

With the second store open popularity grew across the country and Churromania was able to open 15 more stores in less than a year and a half. Now based in Miami, Florida, Churromania opened up approximately 120 more stores and started marketing themselves nationally with the inclusion of American-based franchises having the Hispanic market as their main target.
