Mister Donut

imageMister Donut

Mister Donut (ミスタードーナツ Misutā Dōnatsu?) is a fast food franchise founded in the United States in 1956 and now headquartered in Japan, where it has more than 1,300 stores. The primary offerings include doughnuts, coffee, muffins and pastries. After being acquired by Allied Lyons in 1990, most North American stores became Dunkin' Donuts. Mister Donut also maintains a presence in Taiwan, South Korea, Mainland China, Philippines, Thailand, and El Salvador.

In 1955, Harry Winokur worked with brother-in-law William Rosenberg, the founder of Dunkin' Donuts. After Winokur broke his partnership with Rosenberg, he went on to create Mister Donut with his son-in-law David Slater in 1955, with stores in most of North America. The Mister Donut business became so popular that Winokur and Slater decided to go into franchising. As a result, Mister Donut began a rapid expansion that resulted in the opening of 275 stores in the U.S. and Canada. In 1970, Minneapolis-based International Multifoods Corporation, one of the world's largest and most successful food companies, acquired Mister Donut and its franchising concept from Winokur.

The first Mister Donut outlet in Japan opened in Minoh, Osaka in 1971. Also in 1971, a Mister Donut training center was constructed in Japan. In 1973, the French cruller became available in Japan stores. In 1983, Duskin Co., Ltd. of Osaka, Japan, acquired the rights to franchise Mister Donut throughout Japan and Asia.

Psycho Donuts

imagePsycho Donuts

Psycho Donuts is a donut shop in Campbell, California opened in March 2009. The theme of the shop is "craziness": it specializes in unusual donut flavors and many donuts' names are puns on mental illnesses or other mental health conditions, and the store's decorations include a straitjacket and padded cell. It has been the subject of controversy because mental health advocates claim its theme promotes negative stereotypes of people with mental illnesses.

The shop was opened by Jordan Zweigoron and Kipp Berdianski in March 2009. Berdiansky left the partnership in late July, leaving Zweigoron as the sole owner.

Psycho Donuts describes itself as a shop that "has taken donuts to the next demented level" and "has taken the neighborhood donut and put it on medication, and given it shock treatment". Its products have unusual toppings such as pretzels and Froot Loops, and many of the donuts' names are puns on mental health conditions—for example, there are donuts called "Bipolar", "Manic Malt", and "Cereal Killer"—although several also have names unrelated to mental illness, such as "Donut Fries", "S'Mores", and "Crispy Critters". Some refer to other serious medical conditions, such as "Massive Head Trauma". The shop's decor also has a psychiatric institution theme: it includes a straitjacket and padded room, an eating area called "Group Therapy", and the staff wear lab coats or nurse uniforms. Zweigoron describes the store's atmosphere as that of a "fun mental institution".

Psycho Donuts opened a second location in San Jose in September 2010.

The shop has attracted controversy since it was opened in March 2009. Mental health advocates have claimed that the theme of the shop is offensive and perpetuates stereotypes and stigmatization of mentally ill individuals. Organizations including the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), California's Mental Health Services Oversight and Accountability Commission, and Silicon Valley Independent Living Center called on Psycho Donuts in early April to change the store's name and theme, claiming that negative portrayals of people with mental illnesses create "obstacles" for these people in daily life and can have psychological consequences. Brian Miller of NAMI pointed out that few physical illnesses are subject to the stigma that mental illnesses are, and that a "shop that made fun of cancer" would never be accepted. Author Pete Earley compared the shop's gimmick to the practice of "mak[ing] gay men and lesbians the butt of jokes, as well as blacks, other minorities, and persons who were callously labeled as 'retards, gimps and cripples'". A city council meeting on April 7, 2009 included discussion on whether or not the shop should be forced to change its theme, and protests were held near the shop throughout April and May. Another protest was held on August 2.

Shipley Do-Nuts

imageShipley Do-Nuts

Shipley Do-Nuts is an American doughnut chain with more than 300 franchised stores in the Southern United States, including Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama. Its headquarters are located in Northside, Houston, Texas.

Shipley Do-nuts was created when Lawrence Shipley, Sr. designed a gourmet recipe for doughnuts. Back in 1936, when Shipley first created the recipe, his doughnuts were cut by hand and served warm during the day. Back then, his doughnuts were sold for $.05 per dozen. Lawrence Shipley Sr., Lillie Shipley and Helen Shipley worked with others at their original bakery on 1417 Crockett Street in Houston, Texas. In the 1940's, the doughnuts became such a hit around the area that they were sold on retail and thus, Shipley Do-nuts was born. Shipley’s goal was to continue selling hot doughnuts to customers. He said “When they bite into that hot doughnut, it will bring them back every time”.

Lawrence Shipley Jr. took over the business to continue his father’s dream. Later, Lawrence W. Shipley, III, became the president of the company and carries on the tradition with high hopes of expanding the chain. In total, the doughnut shop has gone through three generations on Shipley men. Today, the chain’s headquarters remain in Houston, Texas on 5200 North Main.

In 2015, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), an agency that regulates the rights of employees in America, charged Shipley Do-nuts for violating federal anti-discrimination laws. The franchise forced Brooke S. Foley, an employee at one branch of Shipley Do-nuts in the Katy area, to take an unpaid leave. This specific branch’s owner and general manager prohibited Foley from working at the doughnut shop unless she provided documentation from a doctor that her pregnancy is not “high-risk”. Foley was later fired from the shop when she was unable to provide formal evidence of the doctor’s permission. This issue violates Title VII of the Civil Right Act of 1964 under the Pregnancy Discrimination Act that discourages pregnancy-related job discrimination. Employers cannot force a pregnant employee to show formal documentation in order stay employed. On November 16, 2015, Judge Alfred H. Bennett signed the consent decree that settled the suit which provided non-monetary relief. Shipley Do-nuts was required to execute non-discrimination policies, post all anti-discrimination notices in their locations, and keep reports of employment actions that involve pregnant workers.

Spudnut Shops

Spudnut Shops were American franchised stores selling donuts made with potato flour called Spudnuts. The parent company no longer exists, but independent stores remain. The original recipe is based on a folk recipe that traces back to Germany.

After brothers Al and Bob Pelton of Salt Lake City ate potato-based doughnuts in Germany, they tried a number of things, from wheat dough that was flavored with potato water to using mashed potatoes, before creating a dry potato mix that not only worked for them but made it possible to franchise the concept. They coined the word "spudnut", and went into business in 1940.

In 1946, the company began establishing a nationwide chain of franchised Spudnut Shops. In 1948, one new franchisee opened a store after paying $50 (approx. $450 in 2010 dollars) plus the cost of 100 sacks of spudnut flour. By 1952, when the Peltons were on the cover of the April 1952 edition of Mechanix Illustrated (“Their Potatoes Make Dough”), a franchise cost $1,750, plus equipment and other costs, for an initial investment of about $5,000 (approx. $40,000 in 2010 dollars).

By 1948, over 200 Spudnut Shops had sprung up across the USA. Spudnuts were advertised widely, with the slogan "Coast to coast... Alaska to Mexico". The cartoon character "Mr. Spudnut" frequently appeared in advertisements, restaurants, and even in parades. By mid-1949, the number was over 225, in 31 states. By 1954, there were more than 300 shops in 38 states.

In 1964, Spudnut shops were selling about 400,000 spudnut doughnuts per day. That year, the company announced that it had successfully designed a process of flash freezing its dough, and announced that it planned to increase its distribution centers. At that time, there were six metropolitan franchise dealers who made fresh dough for distribution to shops that did not want to make their own dough from the dry mix sold by the company.

In 1968, the Pelton brothers retired, selling their company, Spudnut Industries Inc., to National Oven Products, Inc., of Washington state, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pace Industries, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. The annual sales of Spudnut Industries was $2 million. The sale price was $550,000, payable over five years, plus 20,000 shares of Pace Industries (worth about $175,000). At the time, there were 315 franchise holders, with combined annual sales of $25 million, making it the largest doughnut franchise in the United States. In 1973, Pace sold the company, which it had kept as a separate entity, together with National Oven Products, for $1.3 million, to Dakota Bake-N-Serv, headquartered in Jamestown, North Dakota. Within a year of the purchase, the new parent company remodeled the Spudnut headquarters in Salt Lake City, and retired "Mr. Spudnut", the company symbol, replacing him with a design showing a spudnut with a bite taken out of it. The mix for the company's signature product continued to be produced at the company plant in Salt Lake City, available as 50 pound bags of dry ingredients or as frozen dough.

Tim Hortons

imageTim Hortons, Inc.

Tim Hortons Inc. (known internationally as Tim Hortons Cafe and Bake Shop) is a multinational fast food restaurant based in Canada, known for its coffee and donuts. It is also Canada's largest quick service restaurant chain; as of September 30, 2016, it had a total of 4,492 restaurants in nine countries.

It was founded in 1964 in Hamilton, Ontario, by Canadian hockey player Tim Horton and Jim Charade, after an initial venture in hamburger restaurants. In 1967, Horton partnered with investor Ron Joyce, who assumed control over operations after Horton died in 1974. Joyce expanded the chain into a multimillion-dollar franchise. Charade left the organization in 1966 and briefly returned in 1970 and 1993 through 1996.

On August 26, 2014, Burger King agreed to purchase Tim Hortons for US$11.4 billion; the chain became a subsidiary of the Oakville-based holding company Restaurant Brands International on December 15, 2014, which is majority-owned by Brazilian investment firm 3G Capital.

The chain's first store opened on May 17, 1964, in Hamilton, Ontario, under the name "Tim Horton Donuts"; the name was later abbreviated to "Tim Horton's" and then changed to "Tim Hortons" without the possessive apostrophe. The business was founded by Miles G."Tim" Horton, who played in the National Hockey League from 1949 until his death in a traffic collision in 1974. Horton had an initial venture in hamburger restaurants.

Soon after Horton opened the store, he met Ron Joyce, a former Hamilton police constable. In 1965, Joyce took over the fledgling Tim Horton Donut Shop on Ottawa Street North in Hamilton. By 1967, after he had opened up two more stores, he and Tim Horton became full partners in the business. Upon Horton's death in an auto crash in 1974, Joyce bought out the Horton family's shares for $1 million and took over as sole owner of the existing chain of forty stores. Joyce expanded the chain quickly and aggressively in geography and in product selection. The 500th store opened in 1991.
