Working Class Party

The Working Class Party is a socialist political party based in Detroit, Michigan. It was founded in 2014. It's slogan is "For a Working Class Fight Based on a Working Class Policy!"

The Working Class Party competed in the 2014, 2015 and 2016 elections. Candidates were fielded in Detroit, Chicago and Baltimore.

The party is the result of the campaign "For A Working Class Fight" organized by the Trotskyist group Spark in 2014. In that year they managed to field their first five candidates for office (although they were on the ballot as non-party candidates). The candidates ran for Congress, for Dearborne School Board and for the Wayne County Community College Trustee. The latter got elected due to his only Democratic candidate being disqualified before the election.

In 2015 the party ran a candidate for alderman in Chicago in the 25th ward. Candidate Ed Hershey received 614 votes (8.23%).

Despite the harsh ballot access laws in Michigan, the party in 2016 managed to get his name on the ballot for the first time. They did this by turning in more than the required 31,566 petition signatures. In the end they turned in more than 50,000. The Working Class Party fielded candidates for Congress and the State Board of Education in Michigan. They also fielded a candidate for City Council in Baltimore.
