Waseem Akhtar (Urdu: وسیم اختر) (born: November 25, 1955) is a Pakistani politician of Muttahida Qaumi Movement who is current Mayor of Karachi.

After his early academic education he finished his degree program in Telecommunication Engineering. At the initial establishment of MQM, he joined the party in 1988, at this moment he has been working under the group of local Govt. planned for 2 years and have now earned a high up knowledge in political field under the banner of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM).

Waseem Akhtar became Mayor of Karachi on August 24, 2016.

He is the son of Akhter Muhammad Khan. As a main source of income, he runs a business of Real Estate. He is married and has six children.

Waseem Akhtar has been arrested based on unlawful and illegal JIT report of Dr Asim which according to legal experts are inadmissible in courts by the Anti-terror court which has also been declared as 'unjust and ineffective by the 'International Commission of Jurists.

Waseem Akhter was shortly arrested after his nomination papers were accepted by Election Commission of Pakistan (which can only be possible if there is no criminal record) and contested Local Government Elections of Karachi and got nominated as Mayor of Karachi. Since he was nominated mayor of Karachi, unknown persons registered FIR against him all in the District of Malir alone, notorious for SSP Rao Anwar (who has since been suspended for his suspicious activities) and Anti-Terror Court ordered his arrest which seems part of chain of political crackdown against MQM which has blamed the Law enforcement agencies for transgressing their authorities and extra judicially killing many MQM workers including Aftab Ahmed, ex cordinator of Farooq Sattar.
