The station used to air a Rhythmic format but it is shifting back to Top 40 (CHR). WAKZ competes with WDJQ Q92 (from nearby Canton), WHOT-FM "Hot 101", WQAL "Q-104"(from nearby Cleveland), and WENZ "Z 1079" (also from nearby Cleveland).
