Voiron is a commune in the Isère department in southeastern France.
Voiron long formed part of Savoy, but in 1355 was exchanged (with the rest of the region between the Rhône and the Isère, watered by the Guiers Mort) by the count with France for Faucigny and Gex.
The city is located 25 km far from Grenoble and 85 km far from Lyon, between these two cities. Voiron stands at a height of 290 metres (950 feet), on the Morge (a tributary of the Isère River).
The fine church of St Bruno was built 1864-1873 at the expense of the monks of the Grande Chartreuse. Voiron was the starting-point of the steam tramways to Saint-Laurent-du-Pont, 12 metres (39 ft) (for the Grande Chartreuse), and to Charavines, 105 metres (344 ft) (for the Lac de Paladru).
Voiron is a manufacturing town, and it contains numerous factories. Some produce a cloth named after the town, and there are also silk-weaving factories (2000 looms, with an annual output of eight to nine million yards). There are also paper-making factories in the town. Other companies: Rossignol (skis), Radiall Connections, Antésite (a liquorice-flavored drink), Chartreuse liquor cellars, Bonnat Chocolatier (since 1884), Allaman (manufacturing and transporting of petrol tanks).
