Summer Olympics appearances (overview)

Venezuela was one of the fourteen nations that made their first official appearance at the Summer Olympics at the 1948 Summer Olympics held in London, United Kingdom. The National Olympic Committee for Venezuela was recognized by the IOC in 1935 but it did not send any Venezuelan representation because it was sceptical about the possibilities of their athletes against European competitors. Julio César León, the first and only representative of Venezuela in those games had to get support from the British Embassy in Caracas in order to travel to London.

Cycling at the 1948 Summer Olympics

188 athletes of 33 countries competed in 6 events between August 7 to 11 at the Herne Hill Velodrome, London, Great Britain for track events while road events took place at the Windsor Great Park.

The UCI decided to reduce the length of the race from the usually 1,000 metres to 920 metres in order to perform the competition in 2 laps. In the 1,000 metres time trial event cyclists competed individually and tried to perform the best time they could.
