They won their first match on 5 November 2011 against Brunei, scoring 2-1.

Football established in East Timor or Timor Leste in the Portuguese Colony era, where many local and the Portuguese Official played for enjoyment. After Portuguese leave the island, Indonesia invaded the Island and took their cultured and Identity. East Timor gained independence from Indonesia in 2000 following more than 20 years of occupation at the end of the Portuguese rule, which resulted in a long running battle against Jakarta-led forces. East Timor Football Association was accepted as an associate member of AFC at the 20th AFC Congress in 2002. Timor Leste U-23 was invited to 2005 AFF U-23 Youth Championship, this was the first appearances for the team to play Under 23 International Football. Selecao U23 did not achieve success at that tournament. In 2009, Selecao U23 enter the first Southeast Asian Games. Once again the team loss every matches and it was humiliating for the country. The biggest defeat was Malaysia scoring 11-0 at the 2009 SEA Games.Timor Leste have major improvement at 2011 SEA Games, when they use oversea players from Brazil and Australia whom their parents are exile from Invasion at 1975. These players contribute success at the two matches at SEA Games; especially, Murilo de Almeida who score 3 goals. Overall the under 23 team did well and was one of the surprise teams of the SEA Games. The team finished third in their group by recording their first win in the SEA Games and finishing above Laos, Brunei and Philippines. The team finished the SEA games with a goal difference of -4. This was a big improvement form the SEA Games at Laos 2001 where the team finished last in their group with no wins from four games and a big goal difference of -28 and only one goal scored.
