Thurman is a place in Fremont County, Iowa, United States. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 229.
On April 14, 2012, a half-mile wide EF-2 tornado struck Thurman causing no serious injuries or deaths.
Thurman used to be called "Fremont City".
Thurman is located at 40°49′13″N 95°45′4″W / 40.82028°N 95.75111°W (40.820391, -95.751124). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.56 square miles (1.45 km2), all of its land.
As of the census of 2010, there were 229 people, 80 households, and 60 families residing in the city. The population density was 408.9 inhabitants per square mile (157.9/km2). There were 91 housing units at an average density of 162.5 per square mile (62.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.4% White, 0.4% African American, and 2.2% Native American. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 80 households of which 43.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 25.0% were non-families. 16.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 3.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.86 and the average family size was 3.28.
