On May 15, the US State Department reported that the Syrian government of Bashar al-Assad has constructed a crematorium which it uses to dispose of bodies of thousands of people who have been killed in the Sednaya Prison near government controlled Damascus. The construction of the alleged crematorium has been ongoing for awhile and the facility had recently become operational. The information on its purpose - to hide the evidence of thousands of extrajudicial executions - has come from the intelligence community and human rights groups such as Amnesty International.
Acting assistant secretary of state Stuart Jones said: "We believe that the building of a crematorium is an effort to cover up the extent of mass murders taking place in Sednaya prison". Jones went on to say that the Assad regime did not distinguish between rebel fighters and that its forces abducted, tortured, raped and murdered thousands of civilians in the prison.
According to Amnesty International, between 25 and 50 killings are carried out at the prison per week.
According to Jones, the killings have been carried out with full support from Assad's allies, Iran and Russia.
Israeli Housing Minister Yoav Galant called upon Israel to assassinate Assad, and he compared Assad's regime and its crematorium to the Nazis.
