Sylvan Lake is a city in Oakland County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,720 at the 2010 census. It borders Pontiac, the county seat, northeast.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.83 square miles (2.15 km2), of which 0.51 square miles (1.32 km2) is land and 0.32 square miles (0.83 km2) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,720 people, 809 households, and 474 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,372.5 inhabitants per square mile (1,302.1/km2). There were 864 housing units at an average density of 1,694.1 per square mile (654.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.5% White, 2.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.5% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.5% of the population.
There were 809 households of which 26.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.9% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.1% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.4% were non-families. 34.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.13 and the average family size was 2.76.
The median age in the city was 44.8 years. 20.1% of residents were under the age of 18; 4.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 26% were from 25 to 44; 33.7% were from 45 to 64; and 16% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.3% male and 50.7% female.
