St. Elmo is a city in Fayette County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,426 at the 2010 census. St. Elmo was established in 1871.

According to the 2010 census, St. Elmo has a total area of 0.974 square miles (2.52 km2), of which 0.95 square miles (2.46 km2) (or 97.54%) is land and 0.024 square miles (0.06 km2) (or 2.46%) is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,426 people, 564 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.6 people per square mile (585.6/km²).
