St. Elmo is a city in Fayette County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,426 at the 2010 census. St. Elmo was established in 1871.

St. Elmo is located at 39°1′36″N 88°51′7″W / 39.02667°N 88.85194°W / 39.02667; -88.85194 (39.026709, -88.852062).

According to the 2010 census, St. Elmo has a total area of 0.974 square miles (2.52 km2), of which 0.95 square miles (2.46 km2) (or 97.54%) is land and 0.024 square miles (0.06 km2) (or 2.46%) is water.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,426 people, 564 households, and 394 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.6 people per square mile (585.6/km²). There were 621 housing units at an average density of 649.0 per square mile (249.8/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98% White, 0.07% African American, 0.07% Asian, 0.14% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.48% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.09% of the population.

There were 564 households out of which 35.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.1% were married couples living together, 11.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
