Military history of South Sudan
The Military of South Sudan is known as the South Sudan Defense Forces (SSDF) or formerly known as the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA). It became the new reorganised military of the Republic of South Sudan. Following South Sudan's independence in 2011, the SPLA became the new republic's regular army, and Salva Kiir became the president of Republic of South Sudan.
The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War. Throughout the war, it was led by John Garang de Mabior. Following John Garang's death in 2005, Salva Kiir was named the new Commander-in-Chief of SPLA.
On May 16th 2017, South Sudanese President Salva Kiir restructured the army and changed its name – Sudan People Liberation Army (SPLA) – to South Sudan Defense Forces (SSDF).
The air force is orientated towards providing support for ground forces and resembles an army aviation corps. It has 1 air-to-air combat aircraft, and possesses Mil Mi-24 gunship helicopters, transport helicopters and aeroplanes.
It is difficult the ascertain a list of aircraft types operated by the Air force of South Sudan because of secrecy.
