Vidya Balan, with four consecutive wins, has more Best Actress wins than any other actress. Followed by Madhuri Dixit with three wins. Six actresses have won the award twice; in chronological order, they are Kajol, Aishwarya Rai, Rani Mukerji, Kareena Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Deepika Padukone.

Four actresses have won the award in consecutive years; in chronological order, they are Madhuri Dixit (1995–96), Rani Mukerji (2005–06), Kareena Kapoor (2007–08), and Vidya Balan (2010–13).

Madhuri Dixit, Rani Mukerji, Tabu and Priyanka Chopra are the only four actresses who have won both Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress awards. Rani Mukerjee is also the first and only actress to win both these awards in the same year.
