Schleswig was laid out in 1899. The city was named after the Schleswig in Germany and Denmark, from which the original settlers came.

Schleswig is located at 42°9′49″N 95°26′6″W / 42.16361°N 95.43500°W / 42.16361; -95.43500 (42.163614, -95.434944).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.31 square miles (3.39 km2), of which, 1.30 square miles (3.37 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.
