The Roman Catholic Territorial Prelature of El Salto (Latin: Praelatura Territorialis Saltensis in Mexico) (erected 10 June 1968) is a suffragan of the Archdiocese of Durango.
On 2 February 2012 Pope Benedict XVI appointed Father Juan Maria Huerta Muro as Bishop-elect and as Territorial Prelate-elect of the Territorial Prelature of El Salto, Mexico; until now he had been serving as Minister Provincial for the Franciscan Province of the "Blessed Father Junípero Serra." Muro was born on April 9, 1962, in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico. He attended primary school in Guadalajara in 1981, and was accepted into the novitiate of the Franciscan Friars Minor of Guadalajara. He studied Catholic philosophy at the Franciscan Seminary in Zapopan, Mexico, and did his graduate studies in theology for the priesthood at the Franciscan Theological Institute of San Pedro Garza García in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. He qualified for a Licentiate in civil law at the University of Tijuana in Tijuana, Mexico. On April 10, 1988 he made his solemn vows in the Congregation of the Franciscan Friars Minor, and on July 1, 1989, he was ordained to the presbyterate. He has held the following positions: Master of Postulants in Tijuana and Vicente Guerrero, Mexico, Director and Dean of the Parish Council of Priests of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Tijuana. In 2006 he was appointed Minister Provincial of the Province of "Blessed Father Junipero Serra." Currently he is also Episcopal Vicar for Consecrated Life of the Archdiocese of Tijuana.
