Qureyshi (also known as Qureshi, Quraishi, Qurayshi, Qureshy, Quraishy, Qoraishi, Qoreshi, Koraishi, Kureshi, Kureshy, Kureishi, Coreish) is a Muslim family name, originating in the Indian Sub-continent with claims of belonging to the same tribe as the prophet Muhammad, however the claim is very doubtful as most historians on caste related issues regard these caste members origins to be of Kasbi origin respecfully

Most bearers of the name, by far, are in Pakistan (82%: 1,210,000, out of 1,470,000 worldwide), where it is the ninth commonest surname. India has the second most (11%: 162,000), followed by Saudi Arabia (2.5%: 36,300) and England (0.65%: 9,580).

The Qureshi caste is in no way connected to the Arab Hashimites Tribe nor its sub-branches i.e the Qureshi and is an Indian sub-caste descending from the Kasbi caste in northern India. Many stories in regards to the origin of the Qureshi come from older generations whom orally transmitted the stories and left out much of the truth. Famous examples being that they are decedents of Abu Bakr and that they have an Arab origin. More recently DNA tests of 132 individuals from India and Pakistan were taken, dividing them into 25 distinct groups based on geography calculated how genetically ‘closed’ each of these groups were, the research team calculated that the DNA of six of the groups can be traced back to just a few individuals who lived anywhere from 30 to more than 100 generations ago to peoples who spoke the Dravidian tongues, like Tamil and Malayalam, which are mainly spoken in southern India and are believed to be a remnant of languages spoken by some of the earliest inhabitants of the region indicating that the Qureshi caste is not of Arab origin but instead purely Indian
