Peter Hobbs BMus (born 17 June 1970) is a New Zealand composer, musician, and sound designer. He has composed soundtracks for film, television, commercials, art installations, and contemporary dance works. He also fronts the Alternative Country band Lost Demos. Hobbs describes himself as a "diehard advocate for the spaces between the notes"
Born in Christchurch, New Zealand Hobbs was brought up in a musical environment in which spontaneous jam sessions were a regular occurrence. At age 11, he moved to Auckland where at age 14 he formed his first band, Travis Cheesecake. After secondary school, he moved to London, where he worked in the Music and Video Exchange, a notorious record store staffed by local musicians and music buffs. In 1995, Hobbs travelled with the NGO The Serious Road Trip to war-torn Mostar, Bosnia and Sarajevo to support reconstruction projects. There he set up a community recording studio and initiated the art and music festival, Tamna Strana Disneyland. In 1997 he moved back to New Zealand to complete his Bachelor of Music at the University of Otago, where he also tutored in Music Technology. A lover of the Dunedin Sound, he established and fronted the Dunedin band Kitset. Their only album, Testpot, was released in 1999, and the same year nominated for Best Rock/Pop Release, Best New Act and Best Independent Release at the 1999 BNet NZ Music Awards
In 2000, Hobbs moved to Auckland, where he initially set up Pro Tools studios, and freelanced as an audio engineer before establishing his own music studio in 2004. Harmonic Studio creates jingles and sound branding and offers audio engineering services for the advertising industry. Hobbs is a composer of music soundtracks for film, television, advertising, and contemporary dance.
