Pausha

Pausha (Sanskrit: पौष Pauṣa, Hindi: पूस Pus, Tamil: தை Tai) is a month of the Hindu calendar In the Indian national calendar, and the tenth month of the year, corresponding with December/January in the Gregorian calendar. It begins with the solstice on 16 December and ends on 16 January.

In lunar religious Hindu calendars, Pausha / Paush / Poush maas begins with either the full or new moon in December and is the ninth month of the year. It is a winter (Hemanta Ritu) month.

In the Tamil calendar, which is solar, Tai begins with the Sun's entry into Capricorn around January 15, and is the tenth month of the year. The harvest festival of Thai Pongal/Makar Sankranti is celebrated around January 15. The Tamil calendar has stayed in synch with the precession of the equinoxes. Although the "Tropical Zodiac," dating from at least the time of classical Greece [see Sidereal and tropical astrology ], starts Sagittarius at December 16, the sidereal zodiac starts Capricorn at January 15.

Pausa Bahula Amavasya day is celebrated Theppotsavam (Float festival) at Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swamyvari Temple in Simhachalam. The ‘Utsava idols’ are taken in a palanquin to ‘Varaha Pushkarini’.
