The Hope's Pact (Malay: Pakatan Harapan, PH) is a political coalition bringing together centre-left political movements, organisations, parties and independent individuals in Malaysia. The coalition was formed on 22 September 2015, consisting the Democratic Action Party, People's Justice Party, National Trust Party and after 14 March, Malaysian United Indigenous Party. The movement has aimed to form a broad alliance of centre-left parties for the general election due to be held before 24 August 2018.
Pakatan Harapan is a direct successor to the three-party Pakatan Rakyat coalition formed of People's Justice Party (PKR), Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party (PAS). The coalition was founded two years after the 2013 general election. The Pakatan Harapan coalition was formed due to misunderstandings, disagreements and conflicts between PAS and DAP, resulting in PAS splitting off from the coalition and the dissolution of Pakatan Rakyat on 16 June 2015. The dissolution resulted in the formation of a new coalition named Pakatan Harapan, consisting of former Pakatan Rakyat parties, PKR and DAP, and a PAS split-off party, National Trust Party (AMANAH). On 12 November 2016, a UMNO split-off party, Malaysian United Indigenous Party, also abbreviated as PPBM, confirmed that the party is committed to join the opposition bloc Pakatan Harapan, as stated by PPBM Chairman and former Malaysian Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohamad. Later on 13 December 2016, PPBM has officially formed an electoral pact with Pakatan Harapan through a seven-point agreement at the PKR headquarters, and finally on 14 March, PPBM has officially joined Pakatan Harapan as a member party.
