Madiga is a social group found in southern Indian states of Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. And also found in Northern states of Maharastra, Madhyapradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Odisha, West Bengal, Chandigarh.
Madiga is also referred to as Mahadiga, Maadara, Adi Jambava, Maatangi, Makkalu, and Madigaru.
Madiga are artisans group part of dalits or scheduled caste. They are excellent skilled workers, especially known for making leather items. Before the invention of metals, they invented the usage of leather for water transportation in pipes and lifting vessels. A critically acclaimed documentary film, Mahadiga, was made by Lelle Suresh in 2004.
