Ma Tianyu, also known as Ray Ma, is a Chinese Mandopop artist and actor.
In 2006, Ma Tianyu entered the My Hero competition. He was the regional champion for the province of Wuhan and came sixth in the final round, and was chosen as the most popular contestant. In December, he enrolled into the Beijing Film Academy and subsequently released his first single "Only Missing Autumn".
In 2007, Ma released his his first album Beautiful Light. The album was very well-received, and topped the Asia Music Chart. The title song "The Death of Gentleness" garnered a total of more than 1500 million downloads and topped the Chinese pop music overall list. Ma won various awards, including Most Demanded Song and Most Popular Singer awards at MusicRadio China TOP Ranking Chart, and Most Popular MV at the Baidu Fudian award ceremony. Ma continued to release albums throughout the years, gaining fame as a mandopop singer.
Ma also took up acting, debuting in the drama You Are My Dream. In 2009, he was chosen for the role of Jia Baoyu in The Legend of Daiyu. Ma first gained attention in 2010 after he starred in The Vigilantes in Masks alongside Wallace Huo and Cecilia Liu, and won the Breakthrough Actor award at the 2011 Youku Entertainment Awards. Subsequently, he took on his first leading role in Hunan TV's Treasure Mother Treasure Girl, which was broadcast on prime-time slots and captured first-place spot among TV show ratings. In 2013, Ma made his big-screen debut in the movie The Cosplayers, and was chosen as the Movie Actor with the Most Potential at the 4th LeTV Awards.
Ma's popularity greatly increased after starring in the ancient mystery idol drama Young Sherlock in 2014. His role as the elegant and dandy Wang Yuanfang was well-loved by the audience and gained him more fans. This was followed up by an appearance in the highly popular xianxia drama Swords of Legends alongside Li Yifeng and Yang Mi, which captured high ratings and online views.
