Lucas County is a county located in the U.S. state of Iowa. As of the 2010 census, the population was 8,898. The county seat is Chariton. The county was formed in 1846 and was named for Robert Lucas, a Governor of the Territory.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 434 square miles (1,120 km2), of which 431 square miles (1,120 km2) is land and 3.8 square miles (9.8 km2) (0.9%) is water.

The 2010 census recorded a population of 8,898 in the county, with a population density of 20.6666/sq mi (7.9794/km2). There were 4,238 housing units, of which 3,689 were occupied.

As of the census of 2000, there were 9,422 people, 3,811 households, and 2,560 families residing in the county. The population density was 22 people per square mile (8/km²). There were 4,239 housing units at an average density of 10 per square mile (4/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 98.44% White, 0.13% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 0.65% from two or more races. 0.87% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
