The most recent senator to die was Thomas Eagleton of Class 3 (1968-1987) on March 4, 2007. The most recent Class 1 senator to die was Frank P. Briggs (1945-1947) on September 23, 1992. The most recently serving Class 1 senator to die was Stuart Symington (1953-1976) on December 14, 1988.
