Lakeway is a city in Travis County, Texas, United States. The population was 11,391 at the 2010 census; up from 8,002 in 2000. The city is located next to Lake Travis. It is an exurb in Greater Austin.
Lakeway is located at 30°21′55″N 97°58′34″W / 30.365307°N 97.976154°W (30.365307, -97.976154), 16 miles (26 km) west of Austin.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.1 square miles (15.7 km2), of which, 5.8 square miles (15.0 km2) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) of it (4.45%) is water.
The town of Lakeway began with the construction of a 48-room hotel, the Lakeway Inn, now Lakeway Resort and Spa, a 168-room full service resort. Ground was broken October 1962 and the grand opening was July 12, 1963. Honored guests included Lady Bird Johnson and Texas Governor John Connally.
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,002 people, 3,124 households, and 2,496 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,379.4 people per square mile (532.7/km2). There were 5,249 housing units at an average density of 1,119.5 per square mile (233.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.4% White, 1% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, % from other races, and 2.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.3% of the population.
