Joseph "Joe" Veleno (born January 13, 2000) is a Canadian ice hockey player currently playing for the Saint John Sea Dogs of the QMJHL.
On June 4, 2015, Veleno became the first player from Quebec to be granted “exceptional status” allowing him to play as a 15-year old in major junior hockey which led to him being selected 1st overall in the 2015 QMJHL draft by the Saint John Sea Dogs on June 7, 2015. He is the fifth player to be granted exceptional status, with the preceding four being John Tavares, Aaron Ekblad, Connor McDavid, and Sean Day. Veleno began with a successful rookie season, scoring 43 points in 62 games, playing primarily on the third line.
Veleno is of Italian descent, with his grandparents being immigrants from Italy. As a young boy, Veleno was a Washington Capitals fan, and his favourite player was Alexander Ovechkin due to his goal scoring abilities. As he grew older Veleno transitioned to watching Jonathan Toews, due to his abilities as a two-way centre of whom he began to model his game after.
Looking to get noticed due to his potentially generational talent, he moved to Kirkland from Montreal at the age of 12. He played for Lakeshore and Lac-St-Louis.
