Johnson Philip

Johnson C. Philip (born 3 April 1954) is an Indian physicist and Christian theologian. As of 2016, he is Principal of Brethren Discipleship Training Institute in Madhya Pradesh, and one of the most prominent contemporary figures in the Indian Brethren movement and also in Christian apologetics and creationism .

Philip was born in the State of Kerala, and subsequently lived in Chennai, Kota (Rajasthan), and Gwalior (Madhya Pradesh). He moved to Kochi, Kerala in 1994, and has been active in this place since then.

Philip is a strong proponent of creation science and has written several books promoting creationism as opposed to evolution.

Philip opposes both strict Calvinism and strict Arminianism, and has spoken against what he sees as increasing Calvinist influence among the Indian Brethren. He accuses Calvinists of making God the author of sin and of undermining the Dispensationalist theology of the Plymouth Brethren. A supporter of Israel, he claims that many Calvinists are anti-Israel and promote supersessionism, the doctrine that the Church has replaced Israel in God's redemptive purpose, which he believes is a false teaching. He also opposes Open Theism, a theory that God's foreknowledge of the future is limited, that is promoted by some of the more radical Arminians. Philip states that he stands midway between Calvinism and Arminianism, accepting some tenets of both theological systems.
