Jewett is a town centrally located in Greene County, New York, United States. The population was 953 at the 2010 census. The town is named for Freeborn G. Jewett, justice of the New York Supreme Court.
The area was first settled around 1784. The town of Jewett was formed in 1849 from the towns of Hunter and Lexington.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 50.5 square miles (131 km2), of which 50.3 square miles (130 km2) is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km2), or 0.34%, is water.
The town is in the Catskill Mountains and in the Catskill Park.
As of the census of 2000, there were 970 people, 405 households, and 279 families residing in the town. The population density was 19.3 people per square mile (7.4/km²). There were 1,026 housing units at an average density of 20.4 per square mile (7.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.73% White, 0.10% African American, 0.93% Asian, 0.31% from other races, and 0.93% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.99% of the population.
There were 405 households out of which 25.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.5% were married couples living together, 5.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.9% were non-families. 25.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 10.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.89.
