Hunter Valley Grammar School is an independent, co-educational, non-denominational day school located in Ashtonfield, a suburb of Maitland, in the lower Hunter Region of New South Wales, Australia.

Hunter Valley Grammar School is affiliated with the Association of Heads of Independent Schools of Australia (AHISA), the Junior School Heads Association of Australia (JSHAA), the Association of Independent Schools of New South Wales (AISNSW) and Hunter Region Independent Schools (HRIS). The school is also an International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) World School.

Hunter Valley Grammar School evolved from an idea by a Newcastle businessmen, to a vision, and later, a reality which provided the Hunter Valley region with its second independent, non-denominational school behind the nearby Central Coast Grammar.

Newly appointed Governor-General, The Hon. Bill Hayden, formally laid the foundation stone on July 18, 1989.

Hunter Valley Grammar School opened its doors to 110 students on January 31, 1990. Later that year, when the NSW Governor, Rear-Admiral Peter Sinclair, officially opened the School on Thursday November 8, enrolments had increased to 190.

John Weeks remained Principal for seven years before Michael Clapper was appointed in 1998. By then, the School had over 700 students enrolled. Michael Clapper, principal for 7 years, was succeeded by Geoff Millar in 2005. Geoff Millar played a role in developing the school's pastoral care system and promoting the school's values of; responsibility, integrity, respect, citizenship, courage, compassion and most recently, optimism.
