Hungpung also called as Hundung is a village located south of Ukhrul in Ukhrul district, Manipur state, India. The village falls under Ukhrul sub division. Hungpung borders with Hunphun village at Thingrasa now the Union Bank Of India is running there.THINGRASA The literal meaning of the word THINGRASA -two trees interwine as a kind of wedlock. The historical significance of THINGRASA is quite captivating. Oral tradition tells us that the two brothers-in-laws namely Hungpung King and Hunphun King that were settled in one hill range, one day they decided to settle the boundary amicably and honourably. Accordingly they decided to get up early the next morning and which ever place they meet , that spot stretching east and west shall be their boundary. Hunphun King woke up very early and trekked up the slope but Hungpung King leisurely got up, took fine rice -beer and pulled tobacco and then walked down to his bathing stream only to be surprise at meeting his counter part Hunphun King next to his courtyard. But as promised they decided that the penned of the slope would be their boundary . Upon looking up for some identification marks, they saw the branches of two trees interwine as kind of wed lock and named the place as THINGRASA meaning wed lock of trees.National highway 150 that connects Imphal-Ukhrul-Jessami passes through the village. The village is sub-divided into seven major parts; Kamphasom [ KAMPHASOM It is the place where Hungpung Kings' younger brother Kampha was settled on that hilltop, therefore the name of that hilltop settled by Kampha is called KAMPHASOM. Now , on the top of the Kamphasom stands SPs Quarter, otherwise PHED's rest house. Subsequently that hilltop was called Kamphasom. This is history no body denies to this day. Later they were allotted a hill range, now called Sirarakhong ] , Phungreitang east, Phungreitang west, Dungrei, Hamleikhong [ Hamleikhong actually is the Rock Mortar used for grinding the hard rocks and ingredient for making earthen pots. The three Hungpung clans i.e. CHAHONGNAO, YAZINGNAO and VARINGVANAO were the ancestral potters, they collected the hard rock from the seipaikong river and grind in that rock mortar.
[ T.C. Hodson ' Naga Tribes of Manipur London' 1911 ]
History has it that a certain orphan , who came to tent buffaloes in Hungpung learnt the art of pottery while he was in the village for guite a length of his life and when he finally returned to Longpi (Loree), he spread the knowledge, Fortunately, though Hungpung has given up the trade , Longpi (Loree) is continuing the art to this day. HAMLEIKHONG area that we know now is the very area where the three potter clans of Hungpung resided with the Rock -Motar-Hamleikhong with them. This pattern of naming is our ancestral traditional. At present one rock mortar is located at a New Mini Scretariate Compound and the other one is located at Mr. Paisho's resident [ Near D.C. Office ] ] , Awungtang, Vashimtang and Kaziphung. Hungpung is flanked by Nungshong in the east, Pharung in the west, Shangshak in the south and Hunphun in the north.
