Hamel is a village in Madison County, Illinois, United States. The population was 816 at the 2010 census. It is a part of the Illinois Metro East portion of the Greater St. Louis metropolitan area.
Hamel is located at 38°53′15″N 89°50′38″W / 38.88750°N 89.84389°W (38.887524, -89.843949).
According to the 2010 census, Hamel has a total area of 1.16 square miles (3.00 km2), of which 1.15 square miles (2.98 km2) (or 99.14%) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) (or 0.86%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 570 people, 233 households, and 170 families residing in the village. The population density was 491.3 people per square mile (189.7/km²). There were 242 housing units at an average density of 208.6 per square mile (80.5/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 98.25% White, 0.35% from other races, and 1.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.53% of the population.
