Giani Zail Singh Campus College of Engineering and Technology (GZS CCET)now changed to Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical university(MRSSTU), Bathinda is the first institute in Punjab established with the full funding of state government in the year 1989 when the Hon’ble Governor of Punjab Sh. S.S.Ray laid the foundation stone on 23 October 1989. Initially set up as Government Engineering College, it was converted to an autonomous institute as Giani Zail Singh College of Engineering and Technology (GZSCET) in year 1992 and a “Board of Governors” was constituted to manage the affairs of the College. The Chairman of “Board of Governors” is the Hon’ble Minister of Technical Education and the other members of “Board of Governors” includes industrialists, academicians and representatives of the State Government. The college has been made as constituent college of Punjab Technical University in 2011 but in 2015 it has been elevated to be a campus of new university Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University a second constituent of Punjab Technical University. Due to this the name of college has been recently updated.The Campus provides an academic environment under the guidance of faculty. It is named after Giani Zail Singh, the seventh President of India.

Set up as Government Engineering College, it was converted to an autonomous institute in 1992 and a Board of Governors was constituted to manage the affairs of the College. The Chairman of the Board of Governors is the Chief Executive for technical education in the state, and the other members include industrialists, academicians, and senior representatives of the state government. The college was affiliated with the Punjab Technical University since 2011 but in 2015 it has been made campus of new university named "Maharaja Ranjit Singh Punjab Technical University". Initially the college was inaugurated approximately 4 years before NIT Jalandhar. It is semi autonomous in nature.

This College has been made as constituent college of Punjab Technical University in 2011 with the aim to put emphasis on Post Graduate studies and Doctoral Research. It is now with the objective to play pivotal role in producing technical manpower being the second campus of Punjab Technical University.

The college is affiliated to Maharaja Ranjit Singh State Technical University and follows semester system of education. Each academic year is divided into two semester- July/August to December and January to June/July. University examinations are held at the end of each semester.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering was established in 1989. Since then, the department has grown and is well known for being amongst the top institutes for mechanical engineering.It provides industrial training at three levels in the degree course training at three levels in the degree course i.e. two training at the end of first and second year for the duration of six weeks each, and third one at the end of third year for the duration of one complete semester of six months at an industry in the region. The faculty includes academicians and experienced professors from reputed Engineering colleges. As of 1 September 2014, the department is controlled by HOD Prof. Surinder Singh. The Department and the college is also known for its huge investment in the form of a Workshop with well trained and qualified Professors both from industrial and academic backgrounds which makes it one of the best colleges in this field.Shivam Kumar Singh well-known alumni of this campus.
